Updates 2003

Go to Updates 2004 for next year's news and updates.

December 13, 2003. The movie that had the working title Sex & Violence has been shown at screenings with the new title The Civilization of Maxwell Bright. It stars Patrick Warburton who appeared earlier this season stealing scenes on an episode of Less Than Perfect. Producer of the film, Steven John Wolfe says "I made one of those phone calls to Eric Roberts like I made to Jennifer Tilly. While we were doing Fast Sofa with Eric, he said to me, 'I love to do small interesting films. If you ever have a great role, please keep me in mind.' I called him and asked him to read the script of Sex and Violence. It was different for him. 'You're not playing a crazy guy like you always get pigeonholed into playing. It's a nice sympathetic character.' I don't think we see enough of that out of Eric. More times than not, people cast him as a psychotic. Here he plays the best friend. We made his part bigger and bigger as we went along, because things were going so well. David [Beaird] kept writing more for him, handing stuff over to him, combining characters... "

Sorry, I still don't know what the status of Eric's official web site is .

November 15, 2003. According to an article in the Nov. 10 issue of Daily Variety magazine, Shoreline Entertainment has acquired the rights to two new films by Russian filmmaker, Rodion Nakapetov. One of these films is called Border Blues which is actually episodes #7 and #8 of A Force of One that star Eric! I assume this means that they will be released in English. I have watched them in Russian and enjoyed them but I think I will enjoy them even more in English.

Eric has been cast with Robin Givens in a new film that has the working title Forbidden. I don't know what the story is yet.

No word yet on when the movie Miss Castaway will be released. The CGI special effects look very good.

November 4, 2003. Eric's 12 year old daughter, Emma, has been cast in a pilot that is being considered by Nickelodeon. The comedy, titled Unfabulous would star Emma as a musically talented junior high school student. Eric said in an interview, "There would be no one happier than me if my daughter was to become a hugh success."

October 29, 2003. After being absent from the Oct. 7 and Oct. 14 episodes of Less Than Perfect, Eric was back on Oct. 21. To my disappointment, the episode of Less Than Perfect that aired last night was again --- less than perfect. Eric was nowhere to be seen. But there were other things about this episode that make me concerned for the future of the show. The episode was more disjointed than usual. It was like watching two completely different 15 minute shows. "Claude loses the cute guy's phone number" and "People eat someone else's cheese left in the office refrigerator." The person I was watching the show with has corrected me. He says I missed the point. He says that the whole episode should be called "Claude gets to wear black."

October 28, 2003. The next simultaneous viewing of one of Eric's movies on video/dvd will be Raggedy Man the weekend of Nov 8th. After you watch it, go to the guestbook/chat room at Eric Roberts' Official Web Site to discuss things such as:

October 14, 2003. Those of you who watch Less Than Perfect have probably noticed that there are some new characters on the show. Jeb, played by Patrick Warburton, is Andrea Parker's new love interest and Carl, played by Will Sasso, is Claude's new neighbor. Eric was not in the Oct. 7 episode or in the Oct. 14 episode. Unfortunately, Sara Rue and the producers of the show have decided that they want to change the focus of the show. She wants the show to be more about a single girl who lives in Brooklyn and less about the newsroom. The Oct. 14 episode gave most of the newsroom scenes to Andrea Parker and Patrick Warburton. Although Eric has not been dropped from the show, his role has certainly been cut back to make room for these new characters.

September 13, 2003. This just in from Andrea: Some of us at the Eric Roberts actor site message board are trying to organise a simultaneous international viewing of King of the Gypsies video for the weekend of Sept 20th and then we will post our views at the message board. We're doing King of the Gypsies because we are starting at the beginning of Eric's career and we'll work our way through all his movies. We'll do a different one each month. After you have watched the movie please post your review on the message board (guest book) at the Eric Roberts actor web site. Hope you can join us.

August 10, 2003. This just in from Carol -- For those who get the cable channel TR!O, they will be showing L.A. CONFIDENTIAL (2000): Starring Kiefer Sutherland as embattled police detective Jack Vincennes and co-starring Eric Roberts. This dramatic pilot is based on the critically acclaimed film of the same name and follows the glamour and seediness of 1950's Los Angeles. The pilot's cable premiere is on Monday, September 1 at 10:00 p.m.-11:00 p.m., ET/PT.

Photo to the right is from movie Eric was filming in May, Miss Castaway.

July 28, 2003. Eric co-starred in an off-Broadway Play called The Exonerated at The Bleeker Theater at 45 Bleeker Street in NYC. July 1-6 and July 8-13. Fran Drescher and Robert Vaughn also appeared. People who went report that Eric talked to fans after the show, autographed their programs and posed for pictures.

An article in The Star said that Eric will not be on Less Than Perfect next season. ABC has not confirmed or denied so I guess we will have to wait and see.

Spun and National Security have both been released on video. Eric has very small roles in these movies.

July 1, 2003. Eric will be a guest on Regis & Kelly on ABC-TV tomorrow, July 2, at 9:00am eastern time. Sorry for this late notice but I don't watch daytime TV so I didn't know about it until June gave me a heads up. There will be two more opportunities this month to tape Eric's past guest shots on Famous Homes and Hideaways, July 17 at 11:30 am on the Travel Channel and the Drew Carey Show, July 22 at 5:00pm on Truner Broadcasting System.

May 28, 2003. I'm sorry that I have had so few updates. If you watched the Daytime Emmy Awards earlier this month, you saw Eric presenting. So he was in New York City, not in a Russian prison ;-)

I will be away from my computer for about a week so you won't be hearing from me. When I get back from Los Angeles I will be hooking up my new scanner to replace the one that died and then I should be able to get a few new photos up on the web site.

April 21, 2003. Eric hosted the 17th Annual Genesis Awards. The show will be broadcast on ANIMAL PLANET in an edited 1-hour version at 10:00pm and 1:00am EST. There will be a longer 2-hour broadcast at 3:00pm EST on May 4.

If you are collecting DVDs of Eric's movies, you need to visit the new Eric Roberts on DVD/VCD website.

April 14, 2003. There's a little piece on Eric's daughter, Emma, in the April 21 issue of People magazine on page 53: Following in her aunt's famous footsteps, 12-year-old Emma Roberts is stepping up her acting career. The daughter of Julia's actor-brother Eric Roberts and his ex-girlfriend Kelly Cunningham, Emma has already had roles in 2001's Blow and the upcoming indie film Grand Champion. Now she's started shooting her first lead in a big studio feature, the Miramax family film Spymate, with Spin City's Richard Kind. In the movie Emma plays a genius who is teamed with a chimpanzee. "He's cute," she says of the ape, "but you can't distract him or he'll start kissing and hugging you when he's not supposed to." Emma says she speaks to her celebrated aunt regularly but doesn't ask Julia (or her dad) for career advice. "To me she's just my aunt," Emma says. In fact, when it comes to acting, she looks to another role model. "I really like Reese Witherspoon," she says. "Legally Blonde is my all-time favorite movie."

March 19, 2003. Spun is playing at Landmark Sunshine Cinema, Houston Street, between 1st and 2nd Ave. in NYC. (212) 777-FILM-687. Thanks to Andy for being the first to report it. It got a good review in the New York Times the other day and a bad review in Rolling Stone which is sort of the reverse of what I would have expected.

March 10, 2003. Eric is one of this week's stars on Hollywood Squares !!

March 5, 2003. Spun has gotten very good reviews on at least two web sites. They gave it 4 stars at About.com and 8 out of 10 at JoBlo.

Trailer #1 and Trailer #2 for the movie Spun have just been posted on the web. Eric & Mickie Rourke together again. The movie is in limited release so if it is shown in a theater near you, please let the rest of us know.

March 4, 2003. Thanks to the people who resent their email after my email disaster. Also, we have news from Carol that Long Ride Home will finally be released on May 27 (DVD is $18.74 on Amazon) and Strange Frequency will be released on May 13 (DVD is $22.49 at Amazon).

March 1, 2003. I just had an email disaster. If anyone has emailed me at ro.walsh@verizon.net today or yesterday, please send it again. I had not even had a chance to see my most recent email before my email software died and took all of my email with it.

February 27, 2003. June was the first to check in with the good news that ABC has picked up Less Than Perfect for another season.

February 19, 2003. In the January issue of Biography magazine there was an article called "Relatively Speaking" about brothers and sisters in show business. But there was no mention of the Roberts family! Elaine Jarvis of Daly City, California, decided to do something about it and wrote the following letter which was published on page 8 of the March issue of Biography magazine: I'm a huge fan of Eric roberts and, therefore, was disappointed when I didn't see him in your January "Relatively Speaking" pictorial. Although Eric is not as well known as some in your pictures, he's been acting since the late '70s. He earned a Golden globe for his performance in Runaway Train (1985), was nominated for an Oscar andd was sensational in Star 80, and is currently starring in the TV sitcom Less Than Perfect. Of course, everyone knows Julia. But they should know Eric too.

(Eric's other sister, Lisa, is also an actress.)

February 16, 2003. There is good news about Stepan the bear! He has a new home in the zoo at Rostov-on-Don in Russia.

February 6, 2003. Eric has been busy with his series Less than Perfect but he will not be too busy to attend the premiere of Jungle Book II on Sunday, Feb. 9. No mention of bringing Emma but the photo at WireImage shows Eric, Eliza and several children. Is the one in the cute hat Emma?

January 26, 2003. Carol was the first to report the good news that Eric has won the The International Press Academy Golden SATELLITE Award for Actor in a Supporting role in a Series, Comedy or Musical for his role as Will Butler in Less than Perfect.

January 21, 2003. Have you seen Eric's new official messageboard?? Eric's official web site has been updated to include a messageboard so that fans can actually exchange information about their favorite movies and whatever. There are only a few messages so far.

January 16, 2003. Less than Perfect” started on Monday (on M-WEB channel) in South Africa! It will be on once a week, but there was no advertising before hand. Thanks to Hildegarde for the info.

January 13, 2003. National Security opens at theaters this Friday, January 17. Eric plays Nash.

January 6, 2003. Famous Homes & Hideaways is re-running the tour of Eric's home on February 27 on the Travel Channel. If you missed it the first time here's your chance!

If you are going to be in Los Angeles when Less Than Perfect is taping shows and would like to be in the audience, you can request tickets. Send your email to the ABC Audience Relations Department at netaudr@abc.com. Fan mail and requests for autographed photos should be sent to: Less Than Perfect, CBS Studio Center, 4024 Radford Avenue, Bungalow 18, Studio City, CA 91604. ABC suggests sending a stamped self-addressed envelope with your request for the best chance of getting a reply.
