The Continuing Story of Deep Space 2: Page 41
It took Luke almost twenty minutes to make it to the station's computer core, and -- by the time he arrived there -- the powercell of his phaser was down to fifteen percent of full storage, due to all the energy expended on cutting through fallen debris & powerless emergency bulkheads. It took another 5 minutes to get the core's emergency backup power system online. When that was done, he interfaced an external module he had pervaid from a storage room on DS2, and began attempting to access the encrypted data. This proved to be easier than he expected. He had only gotten a few of the security codes from the data packet sent by the Admiral, but the system cracking/slicing software he had available made short work of the encryption, once he had given it some of the Starfleet encryption bases he had on file.
"Davis to DS2 computer: run data relay-transit program, Davis gamma.", he ordered through his commpin.
"Working ... Link established, awaiting transfer.", the computer responded a moment later.
He next entered a command that caused the computer module to begin the data transfer from the 4465-A's computer to the DS2 computer, confirmed that the files were being transfered with out problems, and then locked the transceiver, preventing anyone from tampering with the flow of data. This part of his mission being complete, he started picking his way out of
the area, travercing the Jefferies Tubes, on rout to Ops, where Jan had reported seeing the body of a Romulan, which was phase two of Luke's mission.
"Ah, there you are. I am afraid everyone is dead here.", Jan said shrugging his shoulders. He looked at Luke and saw him looking at the Romulan.
"Luke, that Romulan is not going to tell us anything any more. I suppose we will never know what a Romulan was doing on a Starfleet station. I am going to the Engineering section. My readings indicate that the core is not stable, to say the least."
"I will have a further look here.", said Luke turning to one of the consoles.
Jan crawled over a pile of debris towards one of the tubes that would lead him to engineering, without so much as a single look back. With a look of grim determination, Luke pulled a medical scanner, and returned to the corpse of the female Romulan intelligence officer ...
In engineering Jan had located the problem almost imediately. After contacting Nadine in the Beta, he started to work on a new core configuration. He surely could use Marianne down here, but the Alpha was already on it's way to DS2, and this was not exactly a warp core. The damage was rather large. Some of the additional backup power answered to Jan's input. Four of five consoles were to heavily burned to be of any use. The only one available sometimes gave up. Jan managed to get the voice interface on line.
"Computer ..."
The 4465-A computer interupted with the only thing that really worked perfectly:
"Warning ! Core overload in four minutes !"
