American and Chinese Cinema

An Essay By Antoine Sandoval

†††††From the earliest days of American media and Chinese Operatic theater, both cultures had uniquely stylized processes. Each had evovled by way of ingenuity and creativity, trying to capture the audiences by visual and mental beauty. Many great films of the past had strict instructions of movie making formulas. Of either system, the studios themselves are the most powerful component of the pictures. Over the course of decades, American and Chinese studios had developed contradictory styles.

†††††For American studios, nothing matters more than name recognition. Well known directors will be given the money. The not-so-well known directors are left to forage for the scraps. One such director named Robert Rodrigez ( El Mariachi, Desperado ) was opted to direct The Mask of Zorro. When he requested 44 million dollars instead of 43 million dollars, the studio terminated their agreement with him. The next director in line was Martin Campbell ( 007 - Goldeneye ), who signed on the make the film. His request was granted for 73 million dollars. But in China, they practice equal opprotunity and leniency. Stanley Tong was stunt coordinator and had a story in mind. This was to be his very first picture and he presented it to Golden Harvest studios and they let him make it. SuperCop was the film he made and it was the biggest hit China has had overseas.

†††††The structure for American cinema also greatly affects the actors as well. The studios hire the actors / actresses they know are famous. They never take risks or do research to find who is talented and who is not. If an actor's last movie brought in over 70 million dollars. they will immediately choose him / her. If an actor / actress is talented, but stars in a movie that doesn't do as well, they will not choose him / her on the basis of the draw in the box office. The studios in China do take their chances at finding actors or actreses from anywhere. A lot f the stars are newcomers, from either music or beauty pageants. One woman named Michelle Yeoh ( "SuperCop" ) was formerly Miss Malaysia and begun a film career from that type of background. Now, she is the most famous international Chinese actress in China's history.

†††††Also for the studios, they have the choice whether they want to keep a film. As movie is being made and they don't like the turn out so far, they will begin to auction the picture off to the highest bidder. They feel that the money from the bids will gain gain more money than the movie would make in the theaters. Without trying advanced screening to see an actual audience response, they will sell the rights and film negatives to the studio with the most cash. But in the Chinese market, they have a tendency to take risks with what they pay for. Even if the studios feel that they will not make enough money to cover the film's budget, they will continue with the film anyhow.

†††††From the developement of American and Chinese film, both still do have the ability to change. Their systems have a lot to gain from one another and the change is imminent. With the Warschowski Brother's recent hit "The Matrix", they had proven that the Chinese and American styles can, and do, fit together nicely. Their flare of the Chinese action sequences and careful planning, they had made a new type of cultural hybrid. The merger of both will greatly increase the integrity of films now and in the future.
