"The Eighteenth Angel" is sort of a cross between "The Omen" and "She's Out of Control" (I've actually found that movie in the horror section; evidently, someone must have thought Ami Dolenz would grow 50 feet tall and go on a rampage while Wallace Shawn is yelling, "Inconceivable!"). Like "The Omen", it goes to extensive lengths to site satanic verses, biblical prophecies, and other religious mumbo-jumbo, and like "She's Out of Control", there is the conflict between a very protective father and his beautiful daughter (played by Rachael Leigh Cook, who indeed looks angelic in this picture). The script is reasonably intelligent and actually tries to tell things from the satanist's point of view instead of stereotyping them as irrationally evil folks who would sacrifice anything at the drop of a hat; nevertheless, it only entails a moderate amount of suspense and very little gore. Although the ending is an appropriately dark one, the movie makes the mistake of telegraphing it. The bottom line: "The Eighteenth Angel" isn't bad, but it's not outstanding either. |

OVERALL RATING
** NOTE: The more dots on the domino, the better the movie. 11 or 12 dots is top-notch entertainment while one or no dots signifies the bottom-notch variety that may be slightly more amusing than watching the needles move on the gas meter. ** |
