THE CLOWN AT MIDNIGHT

Lon Chaney has said, "There is nothing more frightening than a clown after midnight", but what about "The Clown at Midnight"? There are scarier slashers such as "Halloween", but this one isn't bad. The dark, deserted opera house is an excellent setting for a horror movie, and a couple veteran actors--Christopher Plummer and Margot Kidder--round out an otherwise unknown cast. Plummer does fairly well with what he's given in the script. Kidder tries to rekindle her career with the small part she has in this movie, but she looks very haggard and her false teeth appear to get in the way of line delivery (she deserves some credit for the effort though). It is quite predictable, though, and it should be no surprise who lives and dies. There is even the old let-me-lend-you-a-hand trick, patterned after what the Joker does in "Batman". Save for the abrupt plot twist toward the end, this is a paint-by-the-numbers slasher with few surprises, but the atmosphere and soundtrack make it enjoyable nonetheless.
The bottom line: "The Clown at Midnight" is predictable, but still decent, as far as slasher flicks go.
