If there is a standard for slashers, "Halloween" would have to be it. It has all the vital ingredients: a methodical, menancing monster, a likable protagonist, a well-written script, an eerie atmosphere, and an ominous soundtrack. With most horror films, the scares come mostly at night, but John Carpenter manages to make things creepy even in broad daylight! Although the gore is lacking, the movie is still very effective because it consistently generates a spooky mood and suspense to boot. Because "Halloween" is deservedly among the most profitable horror movies ever made, it has spawned a large number of imitators and sequels. If it wasn't for the enormous success of this movie, the slasher subgenre would be much smaller than it is today. It's too bad that most slashers don't use atmosphere as extensively as "Halloween" does. The bottom line: Excellent film, a must-see for any horror fan. |
