DAY OF THE DEAD

"Day of the Dead" is the third and perhaps final offering of the Night of the Living Dead series. As is commonly the case with sequels, it doesn't really start where its immediate predecessor ("Dawn of the Dead") ends. While not a bad movie by any means, "Day of the Dead" suffers from a few problems. First of all, "Night of the Living Dead" and "Dawn of the Dead" are superior to this movie; so, some disappointment is inevitable. Second, it spends a little too much time establishing the military men as antagonists, and doesn't spend enough time with the zombies. Also, the zombies only kill the characters who more or less deserve to die. On the plus side, "Day of the Dead" explores some interesting ideas like zombie experiments and having a trained zombie serving as a sort of comic relief. The ever-escalating conflicts between the scientists and the irrational, macho military men delivers some good tension, though the movie overdoes it and should have focused more on the zombies. The gory make-up is excellent and a big improvement over the bright red paint from "Dawn of the Dead". If more of this gore has been used, this might have been a great addition to the Night of the Living Dead series. Overall, "Day of the Dead" is a good--but not great--zombie flick that is best treated as a stand-alone movie rather than a follow-up of two horror classics.

QUARTER BY QUARTER ANALYSIS OF MOVIE

OVERALL RATING

8 out of 12

** NOTE: The more dots on the domino, the better the movie. 9-12 dots is the equivalent of two thumbs up while 3 dots or less means two thumbs up the ass. **
