Yep, it's a sequel, and like many sequels, it doesn't start where its predecessor ends. The beginning of this movie doesn't seem to make much sense. Ash apparently defies common sense by returning to the demon shack with his girlfriend Linda, who has the same name as the dead girlfriend from the first Evil Dead but doesn't look much like her. Either this is intended to be a flashback or Ash has a serious personal issue of living in the past. I suspect the latter to be the case, and the ending ironically reflects that personal issue in an unexpected way. To avoid spoiling the movie, the ending won't be revealed here, but the key words for both the beginning and the ending are "living in the past." So then what happens in the middle? Just about everything imaginable occurs, and there are so many hilarious moments in this movie. Before Jim Carrey ever beats himself up in the bathroom in "Liar, Liar," Bruce Campbell, who plays Ash and even resembles Carrey in "The Cable Guy" from the side, gets into a no-holds-barred fight with his demonically-possessed hand before he finally amputates it. If that isn't enough, the hand scurries away and even flicks off Ash after getting caught in a mousetrap. Ash finally catches the runaway hand with a bucket and a Hemingway book entitled "A Farewell to Arms." Too funny! This barely scratches the surface of all the dark comedy in "Evil Dead II: Dead by Dawn," and I can only recommend buying or renting this magnum opus since there are simply too many great moments to list in this review. |

** NOTE: The more dots on the domino, the better the movie. The maximum of 12 dots can safely be taken to mean "two thumbs up" while no dots can be interpreted to mean "two thumbs up the ass!" ** |
