"The Faculty" is basically a poorly-disguised remake of "Invasion of the Body Snatchers." In fact, the parasitic aliens come from pods and have those familiar worm-like appendages. It even goes as far as directly referring to body snatchers. Even though nothing new is offered in this movie, it is still a fairly enjoyable movie with a good cast. Piper Laurie (who looks nothing like she used to) can still deliver a scary performance, and so does Robert Patrick. The teenagers give some pretty good performances as well. It's too bad that so many of the human characters are just as obnoxious as the aliens. Man, the students sure are violent! In the first few minutes, one student is already getting elbowed to the head from out of the blue, two girls are catfighting after a car accident, and then someone gets thrown crotch-first into a flagpole (ouch!)...It leaves you to wonder if there's going to be a high school massacre, not by the faculty but by a bullied student who finally snaps! It would have been more interesting if the school gets ravaged by a mentally disturbed student (like Christian Slater in "Heathers"), as well as a bunch of teachers under the influence of parasitic aliens, but I guess Kevin Williamson prefers the body snatcher angle all by itself. Also, most of the students are mere stereotypes of troubled teenagers, such as the helpless geek, the depressed Gothic girl, the dullminded jock, and the drug fiend. Furthermore, the queen alien is about 10 times larger than a human, yet she manages to lose all that mass and disguise herself as a person. How is that feasible? Oh well, you can't blame them for trying...and they try pretty hard. Despite the shortcomings, it is a reasonably good effort as far as 90's horror flicks go, and a better body snatcher remake than Abel Ferrara's "Body Snatchers". |

** NOTE: The more dots on the domino, the better the movie. 12 dots on the domino is the best rating while no dots means it would only take up valuable space in the dumpster. ** |
