FRIDAY THE 13th PART VIII: JASON TAKES MANHATTAN

Judging from the title, you would think it would be centered in New York, but actually more than half of the movie takes place on a boat and nothing new happens on it. Been there, done that, except it's on a boat this time. What else can I say? The characters are the usual set of one-dimensional teenagers who command no pity while Jason decimates them in a variety of ways. It really is a shame that they don't use New York as the setting for most of the movie. The area has so much potential: Jason could be stalking aspiring actors and actresses in a Broadway theatre (maybe along the lines of "Clown at Midnight" and "Suspiria"); he could also be chasing some teenagers through a run-down apartment or a dark alley, and if he doesn't kill them, then the local berzerkers will; he could hijack a taxi and kill anyone who calls him...There are just so many possibilities, but all you get in "Friday the 13th Part VIII" is a bloody--but boring--boat ride to New York and not much time is left over for Jason to do much of anything in Manhattan, much less take the city by storm. Personally, I would have it all take place in a bad neighborhood in New York and turn to "Candyman", "Judgment Night", and "Escape from New York" for inspiration, but evidently some genius thought ripping off the previous Friday the 13th flicks would be a better idea.

The bottom line: "Hey, fugetaboutit."
