HOUSE

A rather quaint mixture of horror and comedy, "House" begins as a serious haunted house flick but steadily mutates into a comedy as the plot progresses. The cast is above-average, especially with George Wendt from Cheers providing comic relief as the meddlesome neighbor and Richard Moll from Nightcourt as the main monster of the house. Some of those monsters are funky-looking creatures, and it's pretty funny when the unfortunate protagonist (played by William Katt) has to bury them in the backyard without rousing too much suspicion from the neighborhood. While not a bad flick, it seems rather uneven. "House" would probably be better if it leaned even more toward the comedic direction (a la Evil Dead II) since it already has plenty of whacky elements that could be exploited to their fullest.

On a side note, the house used to film this movie is in Monrovia, California on Melrose Ave.. I was there once in 1987 or so. The front and the interior are the same as what you see in the film. However, there isn't a swimming pool in its tiny backyard, and you would have a tough time finding room to bury a few dead monsters back there.

QUARTER BY QUARTER ANALYSIS OF MOVIE

OVERALL RATING

7 out of 12

** NOTE: The more dots on the domino, the better. A dozen dots indicates a terrific movie while no dots means it's just terrible. (Hmmm, now why does "terrific" mean good while "terrible" means bad, even though the words appear so similar?) **
