This Nightmare on Elm Street sequel is a good example of what I dub the "comedic third phenomenon," where the third movie in a series tends to be more humorous than the first. Indeed, Freddy Kruger has become a more impish, wisecracking demon, but other than this change, Freddy is still his teenager-slicing self. Another interesting change is the casting. Some of the cast from the original Nightmare on Elm Street has returned. Plus, well-known, high-caliber actors like Larry Fishburne and Patricia Arquette are in it. Zsa Zsa Gabor even makes a seemingly unlikely cameo appearance as a victim! The story is somewhat better than the one for "Nightmare on Elm Street 2" but not as good as the first in the Elm Street series. While there is more substance to this movie than "Nightmare on Elm Street 2," I found some of the confrontations with Freddy to be rather corny, such as the nerdy kid becoming a wizard, and the mysterious white nun (Mrs. Kruger?) serves as a set-up for a sequel more than anything else. Nevertheless, the likable cast helps in making this an above-average horror film and a surprisingly good sequel. Typically, a movie series starts off strong with the first offering, loses some luster with the second and quite a bit more with the third. Fortunately for Freddy (and my viewing experience), "Nightmare on Elm Street III: Dream Warriors" bucks that terrible trend. |

OVERALL RATING
** NOTE: The more dots on the domino, the better the movie. The maximum rating is 12 dots. One or no dots means you better call the bomb squad because that's exactly what the movie is (a bomb). ** |
