NIGHT OF THE DEMONS

While the premise of "Night of the Demons" is nothing new with its plot of amorous--and generally obnoxious--teenagers getting slaughtered one by one inside a strange house, it is directed in a rather distinctive style and has surreal moments like no other film. The special effects are quite impressive, especially when the low budget is considered. One of the most distinguished moments of "Night of the Demons" involves Linnea Quigley putting lipstick on her breasts and then shoving the tube through her nipple! The ending (not to be revealed here) is a real corker too. In addition to some unforgettable visuals, the soundtrack rocks and adds some fun to the movie (along with "Stigmata Martyr" by Bauhaus and the keyboards from the intro music, I found "Computer Date" to be an amusing little song). A few things mar my viewing experience, namely the standardized chases through the house and the shoddy acting (Another thing, why does Cathy Podewell often sound as if she's throwing her voice? It's especially noticeable in the scene where she delivers a line while heading for the wall. In that particular scene, she sounds about 20 feet closer than she appears on screen!) Casting the shortcomings aside, this is, for the most part, a fun film to watch at night, along with its excellent sequel, "Night of the Demons 2".

OVERALL RATING

9 out of 12

** NOTE: The more dots on the domino, the higher the rating. The maximum 12 dots means the movie is awfully good while one or no dots means the film is just plain awful. **
