PHANTASM

The original Phantasm is still one of the most imaginative horror movies around today. As the title suggests, the scenes border on being surreal, and there are some unsettling moments, particularly the flying sphere that lodges into a man's skull and drains copious amounts of blood from him. Along with the bloodsucking sphere, a very sinister undertaker known as "the Tall Man" distinguishes the Phantasm series from the rest of its genre. The Tall Man is as mysterious as he is menancing, and this is what makes him such a great villain. Not only can he effortlessly lift over 500 pounds, he also walks with a peculiar stride, talks with either a desiccated voice or an omnious growl, and even stalks his victims as a seductive woman! Also, one of the most remarkable qualities of this movie is its low-budget charm. Arguably some of the special effects and background music are rather cheezy, but they add a peculiar energy and even a sense of fun to the film. This sense of fun, incidently, invites you to watch Phantasm over and over again, and no doubt this has been largely responsible for making this movie into a cult favorite.

QUARTER BY QUARTER ANALYSIS OF MOVIE

OVERALL RATING

12 out of 12

** NOTE: The more dots on the domino, the higher the rating. 11 or 12 dots is considered to be excellent. One or no dots means you're much better off fast-forwarding the movie rather than playing it. **
