If you come to a point while watching this where you figure it's gotta be a Frankensteinesque combination between a horror movie and a romantic "dramedy", don't blame yourself. Blame the scriptwriter and director. Blame the otherwise watchable actresses, Nicole Kidman and Sandra Bullock, for getting on the wrong bus. The toothsome two play witch sisters who are as different as rhubarb is from potato. Cursed by a spurned ancestor, they can marry but the husband will die too soon. Stockard Channing and Dianne Wiest portray their loopy, warm-hearted aunts who, though endearing, can't drum up the magic to save this fragmented story. Aidan Quinn is the detective come a-calling - fulfilling Bullock's impossible dream-guy criteria - to investigate the disappearance of Kidman's last exotic boyfriend, who has been accidentally done in but "revived" as an evil spirit. Besides the great setting and pretty clothes here's the best scene: a possessed Kidman leaves a slimy trail of disgusting toads. Perhaps that explains everything... - Lou Joon Yee [So-so]
