THIS is about the despair and heartbreak of a young woman (Sandra Bullock) left by her philandering husband (Michael Pare). She takes her young daughter (Mae Whitman) back to the home of her wonderfully eccentric taxidermist mum who is already bringing up a small grandson from another daughter. Mum tries to match Sandra with a former high school admirer (a nicely buffed up Harry Connick Jr.) but Sandra's progeny hates Harry and she doesn't mince her words, no-sirree. The pretty but depressed Sandra has to contend with former schoolmates who have always been envious of her homecoming-queen looks and can't help taking kicks at her while she's down. While Bullock and Connick Jr. carry their roles competently enough, Gena Rowlands as mum is wonderful and so is the little nephew (Cameron Finley) who makes believe he's a different critter every day. This film directed by Forest Whitaker is slow in pace but big on pretty pictures and fresh script - Lou Joon Yee [Between "Recommended" and "So-so"]
