Although the movie proceeds at a snail's pace after an attention-grabbing opening, Hope Floats, true to its title, rewards viewers' patience with a hopeful, heart-warming message at the end. In what is a very plausible scenario in scandal-crazy America, Birdee (Sandra Bullock, in perhaps her most grown-up role) finds out on a sleazy talkshow that her best friend is sleeping with her hubby and struggles to build a new life with daughter Bernice (Mae Whitman). The self-pity, ridicule and obstacles Birdee has to go through before she rediscovers happiness - and herself - are portrayed realistically. There's no slam-bang action or sex here; the focues is on the very real (almost dull) people and their broken hearts, and how those hearts are slowly and eventually healed. - William Kee [Between "Recommended" and "So-so"]
