A Bit 'Bout the 'Burbs

This section is made up of information Mayfield Place has gathered as well as things 'burbs fans have sent in. If you have any interesting, inside, or informative pieces of information, e-mail Mayfield Place and it might be put up here. The text I recieved and found has been altered and re-worded. The order these are listed in is the order I recieved them in. Also, there are some un-claimed tidbits at the bottom. If any of those belong to you, please let Mayfield Place know and you'll get the recognition you deserve. I want to thank everyone who has sent in things so far--and please feel free to keep sending them in!

Brian
  • Walter runs into his house twice during the bee attack.
  • Adding to what is on the "Did You Knotice" page about Mark eating animal crackers, he bite's the head off, which Brian calls, "chilishly gruesome."
  • When Ray waves his hands saying, "This is what I need, Carol...," his hands wave with the sound of the cartoon on the TV.
  • Again, going off what the "Did You Knotice" page, in the scene where Mark comes out of his house with Bonnie to raise the flag, you can see the thing in his leg--it is not garbage like we originally thought.
  • There is no way a rolling chair would work in an ambulance--a moving one. Trust him, he used to work in one.
Pete
  • Both Ricky Butler and one of the garbies (Robert Picardo's character) have tie-dye shirts on.
Carissa
  • She places the location of Mayfield Place (Hinkly Hills) to be in Iowa (from the zoom).
  • That tree in the Klopek's front yard, an Eucalyptus tree perhaps? ...Not in Iowa.
  • There are mountains in the background on a few occasions--probably not in Iowa.
  • When Mark is on the roof, you can see a city in the background.
Julie Kangas
  • You probably noticed it, but there is a demon face on the front of the Klopek's furnace.
  • Something that appears to be blood stains are visable in the Klopek's garage when Hans is beating the hell out of the garbage with a stick. Ironically, the stains are gone the next morning. Creepy.
  • When Ray, Mark, Bonnie, Queenie, Ricky, and Art enter Walter's house, the television is left on which is a sign of a struggle. The funny thing is that the TV says, "What's going on here? A murder?"
Spencer
  • Art, played by Rick Ducommun, as we all know, cuts off the power for Ray and Mark to jump over the fence undetected. Ducommun, incidently, was also in Die Hard where he also cut off the power.
Mike Mariono
  • With the French dubbing on the DVD version, instead of saying, "Paris France," Ray says, "Tokyo, Japan." The voice acters are credited during the credits.
  • When Ray is sitting in the kitchen in the morning (not eating) and says "This is what I need, Carol; I need this" he moves his arms in sync with a slide whistle from the cartoons playing on the TV.
Don
  • The temporary music that plays during the alternate ending was composed by Bernard Herrmann. These selections were taken from Fahrenheit 451 ("The Road") and Serling's Twilight Zone ("Walking Distance") respectively.
  • The first piece of music from the The 'Burbs trailer was taken from The Trouble With Harry, also by Herrmann.
Mayfield Place
  • The security system on the Klopek's fence is fixed the day after Art breaks it.
  • --more to come-- (I had to put something down)
Theories on the bee in Art's Mouth Over at the message board, we had a discussion on whether the bee is live or not in Art's mouth. Is sure is moving. Here's what we came up with:

Is the bee in Art's mouth real? Some say that Art risked having a live bee in his mouth for the shoot. Some say the stinger was taken off right before shooting. Or, was it not a bee? Could it have been a fly? Or was it a breed of bee that did not sting? Would Universal Studios want to risk the boycotts for killing a bee (taking a bee's stinger off will kill it)? Or, was it an animatronic droid? Would Universal go to all that trouble to make a mechanical bee for a few seconds of footage? Mayfield Place will do it's best to get to the bottom of this...

UPDATE: Dan recently e-mailed me saying we did get to the bottom of this. I usually don't check the bottom of the message board, but someone posted what seems to be the real answer. Some say that the bee was overlayed--it wasn't in Art's mouth at all. When he spits it out, it just disappears, it doesn't fall to the ground. It does look very real though and I'm not sure if I go with this although it does seem to be the best explanation. I can never make up my mind when I watch it.

Lost and Found (Please identify yourself if you came up with these)
  • In Paramount's Deep Imact, there is a street called Mayfield Place.
  • There is another ending (not the one on the DVD) where the garbies are found bound and gagged in the Klopek's trunk and Ray is supposedly killed in the van although it is never actually shown.
