well, it finally appears that Just Outside the Door has pretty much run its course in terms of being shown. i haven't really attempted to do anything else with it since it appeared in the 2000 Fort Worth Film Festival in october 2000, partially because i have been struggling to overcome a series of injuries. i don't anticipate doing anything else with it unless i need to show it as part of my attempt to land funding for my next film project.

the last new development for the film that seemed to have a life of its own was that Just Outside the Door played in the 2000 Fort Worth Film Festival in Fort Worth, Texas!! the festival ran from October 19-22, 2000, and Just Outside the Door screened (grouped together with a few other short films, all of which were far inferior to my film, i must say...) at the following dates/times:

friday, october 20 at 8:00pm
saturday, october 21 at 6:00pm

the festival screenings were at the AMC sundance square theaters in downtown fort worth.

also, Just Outside the Door continues to play on the internet. The entire film is on another website, the FilmFilm.com website, which features other upcoming independent films, both shorts and features. incorporated as part of the site is a contest to reward the makers of the best films with an opportunity to shoot another one...

there is a place to vote for the film, to write reviews or to see what other reviewers have said about it. so go check it out and vote for it! write a review!

well, Just Outside the Door participated in the Zoomgo Film Fest 2000 on the web.

the entire film was shown on the Zoomgo website, one of 100 short films chosen, and the voting competetion ended on july 31, 2000. after a few short stints in the top 10, Just Outside the Door finished 36th with a final rating of 2.60 (from a rating of 0 through 5 stars), so i didn't make the 10 finalists in the contest. oh well.

now that the contest is over, it appears that Zoomgo is no longer showing films at all, so the film is no longer available there.

it was previously reported that Just Outside the Door, the entire film, was available to be seen on the web at iFilm.net.

unfortunately, iFilm.net got a little too big to stay independent, and began charging filmmakers for the 'privilege' of keeping the film on the site. i opted not to pay them, so the film is no longer there...

.

.

interestingly, i had previously reported receiving a number of solicitations regarding Just Outside the Door, presumably from people who saw the film on the iFilm.net website.

The PBS TV station in northern california, KQED asked me to send them a video copy to determine if it could be broadcast as part of their independent short film series, but unfortunately, they then said it wasn't suitable for broadcast. whatever.

i was also contacted by the New York International Independent Film Festival. they asked me to submit the film for possible inclusion in their festival that took place in july 2000, but the application fee was $300, so i decided not to enter it. i thought that was just too steep a price to pay. perhaps a foolish move, perhaps not...

in other news, i'm pretty much done with my next script, titled: The Empire State Strikes Back. it still needs a slight bit of tinkering, but it is basically ready to go.
once i am physically able again to consider soliciting funding for it, i will do so. for more on this, go to the section on this site.

as previously noted, the director of photography for Just Outside the Door, chris freilich, contributed to a documentary that aired on The Learning Channel at 8:00pm on Saturday, October 30th, 1999, entitled "The Secret World of Ballroom Dancing." The production company told him that "some" of his footage made it into the final product. It might have been only one 3-second shot is all they used, or an entire 5-minute segment of footage (i actually missed it, so i don't know...)

as you all know by now, Just Outside the Door was part of the Always Independent Film Festival, an online film festival that showed the film on the web from august 9-22, 1999.

i was informed by the good folks at the Always Independent Film Festival, that Just Outside the Door had a total of "between 2000 and 3000 viewers" (they were real specific), with an average viewing time of 18 minutes, 32 seconds! that sounds pretty positive to me, considering the entire film is under 25 minutes.

the entire film is no longer on the AIF website, but i still have a page in their archives. so the first 2 and a half minutes of the film are still on that site. if you go to www.alwaysif.com, you can view the opening of the film -- as well as see some other info about the film, including a "director's bio" detailing the evolution of director john tranchina's interest in filmmaking. as usual, though, if your system goes through a firewall, you probably still won't be able to view it. but if you can, check it out!

in june 1999, i attended the Temecula Valley International Film Festival in temecula, california (about halfway between los angeles and san diego). this was the first film festival that Just Outside the Door screened at, and it was a lot of fun.
