Maybe you know that Joaquin was on the cover of August`s P.O.V. They didn`t post the story
about him at P.O.V.online (why not?!?), but they were so friendly to send me the article
(Thanx a lot)!!!
here some excerpts from the article:
Dark sunglasses, dark clothing, a lit cigarette and sneakers is Phoenix`s standard
uniform. The sunglasses and muted threads help deflect public stares; he hates being
watched. The cigarettes help contain his manic energy. But even chain-smoking, Phoenix
rocks and sways, bursting into song or tossing out a stream of expletives.
He was the centerpiece of a print ad campaign by Prada, the high-end fashion house, yet he
refused to wear the company`s leather shoes and belts. (Prada took a picture of someone
else`s legs with the shoes and put the picture next to Phoenix, who was shown in a suit.)
"I know people that are like, "I would never do one of
those Japanese commercials for a million dollars, two million dollars." Screw you.
Goddamn right I`ll do a commercial for two million dollars. Are you high? Fucking-A, I
will. I`ll do it for two million dollars and then what am I going to do tomorrow? I`m
going to do something good with that money. That`s how I see it." But you
wouldn`t do a McDonald`s commercial. No, you`re right, I wouldn`t do
that.
Would you ever do a big-budget action movie?
"I would do one of those huge movies because I want to
experience it. I think it`s probably a lot easier for me to do a scene in which I`m having
an intimate conversation with someone on a quiet little set than it is to scream at a blue
screen because I think a giant dragon`s penis is trying to swallow me. That, to me, is
going to be a challenge."

Surprise! Surprise! We are already able to watch the 8mm-trailer!!!!
(quicktime)
It looks like a dark action-thriller (I dont like dark movies). You dont see much
of Joaquin in the trailer - I hope that he has more scenes in the movie than the trailer
shows. (He has a lot of tattoos on his arms and his chest!)

Goose at the post-premier party at Irving Plaza in New York for the film Clay Pigeons,
starring Janeane Garafolo, Vince Vaughn, and Joaquin Phoenix. After a set by New York
faves Firewater, who appear on the soundtrack and were given quite the flattering
introduction by party-attender, and longtime fan M. Doughty of Soul Coughing, the band was
joined onstage by Vaughn, Phoenix, Evan Dando of the Lemonheads, and Manson bassist Twiggy
Ramirez for a cover of "Little Sister," which has been recorded by Elvis Presley
and many others. The band sported Firewater singer Tod Ashley and Vaughn on vocals (Vaughn
was said to be a "better
than average singer"); Ramirez trying hard to figure out the bass lines, (Later
someone asked of Ramirez, "That guy with the dreads, he's the drummer, right? Because
he sure as hell can't play bass!"); Dando (donned in the same Iron Maiden T-shirt he
was seen wearing the night before) on guitar; and Phoenix on moroccos. Front and center
for the performance were Liv Tyler and Kate Moss, who were playfully holding hands during
the show.

Clay Pigeons comes out September 25
Thursday, Sept 17 1998
"I think we genuinely like each other," said Vaughn. "Acting means a lot to
him, and I respect that, because it means a lot to me." There was something else that
seemed to be just about right. "We were, like, reduced to 12-year-olds when we'd hang
out with each other. When we were flming it was like summer camp."

Joaquin Phoenix gets on the treadmill
Hollywood actor Joaquin Phoenix has hired a trainer to help him tone up for his next film
role as a street tough in The Yards. The younger brother of late heart-throb River Phoenix
found the transformation exhilarating: "On the treadmill I
thought my shins were going to explode. It's the best." The movie, due out
next year, also stars James Caan and Boogie Nights star Mark Wahlberg. Phoenix is no
stranger to pushing himself to the limit for Hollywood - he starved himself to emaciation
for his role in prison movie Return To Paradise.
Clay Pigeons (coming Oct 2)
Will Joaquin Phoenix and Vince Vaughn become this generation's answer to Matthau and
Lemmon, or even the next Damon and Affleck? The pair has attracted some sweet publicity
for their roles in the recent, well-received Return to Paradise and now the comedic
thriller Clay Pigeons. Phoenix is Clay Bidwell, a hapless gas-station attendant in Mercer,
Montana, whose best friend kills himself and sets Clay up for murder when he
finds out about Clay's grubby affair with his slatternly wife (Georgina Cates). Enter
Lester Long (Vaughn), a handsome drifter whose swift entry into Clay's world coincides
with an increasing body count that fingers Clay as the prime suspect and invites the
probings of FBI agent Dale Shelby (Janeane Garofalo, who also pops up in Permanent
Midnight). Former music-video director David Dobkin may be new to the big screen, but he's
got some heavyweights behind him Tony and Ridley Scott weigh in as executive
producer and producer, respectively. Clay Pigeons brings to mind a hipster, hot-weather
version of Fargo, but even if it's totally derivative, it should be fun watching
two actors who are rapidly shooting up the it list.
Take a look at The Most
Beautiful Cast in the World (Inventing the Abbotts). There you will find an interview
with Joaquin (and also one with Liv and Billy Cudrup).

PRINT SOUP...09/02
Phoenix Falling... When someone offers up a raving quote for publication, two
explanations are possible: 1) That person is a genius and too far out of your intellectual
league; or 2) the person has a geranium in the cranium and is quoted only because he's a
movie star. In the case of Joaquin Phoenix, in the September P.O.V., we're betting on
choice 2. When asked, "Are you comfortable with making a great deal of money as an
actor?" Phoenix responds with the baffling, "With the work I do, if I feel like
I want some materialistic item that's going to make me happier, I'm going to look forward
to driving a convertible on the weekend, if it makes me feel fabulous, then I'll do it.
And I'm not going to think, Well, what about someone else? Because if I feel better and
I've been able to express desires I have and I feel good, I'm going to be in the right
frame of mind to help someone else out." And when asked if he would ever perform in a
big-budget action movie, he expounds, "[It's difficult] to scream at a blue screen
because I think a giant dragon's penis is trying to swallow me." To which we can only
say, stop eating paint.
