Gattaca
I'm not sure if anyone has the same Ethan Hawke bias I have, but try to get over it
long enough to appreciate this movie. It's very clever short story type science fiction
about a future where your entire life is determined right down to your cause of death
within thirty seconds of being born. Those who aren't physically strong, as a result, get
no better job than, say, janitor. As a result, they have created a process where you can
pick the best qualities of each parent and produce a super child. Hawke was born the old
fashioned way (a "God child," they call him), Uma Thurman is one of the test
tube prodigies. Hawke fakes the identity of another wunderkind who is now handicapped in
order to infiltrate Gattaca and go up on a space launch. Hawke, however, must take very
special care to conceal his true identity. Even en eyelash picked up by the cleanup crew
could give him away. This movie didn't quite find a mass audience in the theater, but
don't be surprised if it becomes a cult classic.
