Lilac
Time - Lilac6 (SpinArt/Cooking Vinyl)
Now,
this is my idea of adult contemporary.
Imagine if those radio stations that do
“Love songs, and nothing but love songs”
segments also played this.
Ahhhhhh, what a wonderful world… Okay,
I’m finished daydreaming.
Stephen Duffy gets the band back together
after contemplating quitting the business, and while
it isn’t as ridiculously good as 1999’s Looking
For A Day In The Night (one for the ages, that
record), it’s still a damn solid album.
They stick to what they do best, the
galloping country pop of “I Want To Be Your
Man,” but there are newer influences apparent,
like the dub washed instrumental “Jupe Longue.”
Fans of Barenaked Ladies (check your albums
for Duffy’s name, he’s on nearly all of them)
will definitely like “Entourage,” which is more
BNL featuring Duffy than Lilac Time featuring BNL.
The bottom line; Lilac Time records are
hopelessly out of time yet timeless, due in large
part to the baroque tone heard throughout.
“Middle age, it’s all the rage,” as
Duffy says on the opening track.
With me pushing mid ‘30s myself, I
appreciate his mindset.
I appreciate his records even more.
