There is a growing demand for independent assisted living
apartments.
The typical situation is a stand alone facility with apartments. These range from
studios up to two bedrooms units, usually with kitchenettes. There is normally a communal
dining room which is more like a fine dining restaurant than a cafeteria. A given number
of meals are usually included in the monthly cost. Most have transportation services and
planned community activities. There is usually extra security and often a medically
trained person on duty at a front desk. Some to allow pets for an extra fee.
Nursing Homes Offer Assisted Living Units
Many nursing homes are now offering separate assisted living units. These are most
helpful, when one spouse needs extensive medical care, while the other may need light
assistance, but they want to stay together.
Senior Partners
Many communities have a house mate matching service. Sometimes the solution is for
seniors to find another senior roommate, other times a paring with a younger person is
appropriate.
Boarding Homes
An idea whose time has come again. Typically, a room is rented and meals are provided.
There is no type of personal care usually in these homes. They are an affordable
alternative to a studio apartment.
The best place to look for these type of living arrangements is in the phonebook. The
local senior information service also usually has a listing of the type of units available
in the community. Also, consult with your doctor, often they have insight as to the
viability of this option.
