Adult family homes offer a "home like" atmosphere with 24 hour
supervision. These facilities are licensed by the state. There is a low staff to resident
ratio. Care is individualized. Special diets can usually be accommodated. The staff
usually have a good working relationship with the local medical care providers, such as
doctors and home health agencies. Some accept state residents, others only take private
pay. Each home is different and will accept differing levels of care.
List of Things to Ask About or
Look For
|
- Is the home licensed? Just because they are supposed to be does not mean they are.
- Do they allow visitors at any time? Most of the good ones do. However, it is not
real polite to knock on the door at 3 am to visit Grandma.
- What type of meals do they serve?
- What type of personal care assistance is provided?
- Look at the current residents. Do they look well cared for?
- Talk to the residents. Are they happy?
- Ask for references. Follow up on these references and call them.
- Who is responsible for what? Does the resident provide personal care items or the home?
If the home does, is there an extra charge?
- View the bedrooms. Look at the bathrooms.
- . Find out how they handle medications.
- . What about phone usage?
- . Check with the local agency on aging do they have any
information on the home?.
- . Is the staff medically knowledgeable?
- . Just because everything looks new does not mean it is a top of the line place.
- Do they seem to CARE?
