blue spiral Reiki Masters, and all level practitioners, all disciplines....This is a message to you...

This is not a belittling article....hardly. It is gently given from the heart....PLEASE READ ON! Adonea and I have been in energy work/healing/teaching for many years and only in Reiki for 6 years. We have seen Reiki grow at an amazing rate...it seems that there is little reverence for the way the system is taught: we learned that this is not something that could be learned over a weekend; that indeed to truly understand the fullness of Reiki would take a lifetime of practice, experience, and commitment. The lack of work towards earning the right to be called a "Master" saddens us, but we none the less will continue to work Reiki on ourselves, with the intent of moving ever closer toward spiritual enlightenment. As we continue in our use of Reiki, we have become aware of the depth of the knowledge contained within Reiki's teachings. This knowledge is available to every seeker; but to approach it, we must give up the egotistic attitude that we 'know-it-all'. We know nothing! It took spiritual aspirants lifetimes of seclusion and focused mindfulness to gain the knowledge contained within their religion's foundation of beliefs. Only when one level of understanding was demonstrated unwaveringly, and the student showed reverence and responsibility in thought, word and action toward the teaching, would the seeker then be offered higher teachings. The right to receive more information had to be earned, through commitment, practice, discipline and work. We hardly see that in the system of Reiki today. It seems that when a person wants to learn Reiki, it is seen as a vehicle by which many teachers can make money; as if one's readiness for spiritual teachings hinges on their ability to pay...how sad. In fact, we have seen instructors take a person who knew nothing of energy/healing/spirituality all the way to Reiki "Mastership" in one weekend and even one day. How is this "instant" elightenment helpful to anyone? And the saddest part is that the method by which one learns Reiki is most often the same method used to teach others. We ask that a moratorium on this form of teaching Reiki be voluntarily instituted, allowing each of us who are Masters to go "within" and to ask if we are truly giving our students our best; or if we are just teaching to make a living. We urge each "Master" to look long and hard into their Truth; and to voluntarily refrain from this quick, shot-gun approach to teaching.

But I have digressed, and will move on to the main reason for writing this. We have followed Reiki mailing lists, Reiki newsgroups, Reiki chats, and the burgeoning numbers of websites on the internet about Reiki, and it is quite apparent that there is lot of repetitive information, misinformation and often a "holier-than-thou" attitude toward other "Masters/Teachers" who express their opinions/understanding, and style of teaching.. This has to stop! When a person is given a certificate of Reiki Mastership, it does not mean one has mastered Reiki, but rather that he/she has made the commitment to integrate Reiki into every aspect of their life; to eat, breathe, sleep and "be" Reiki. Perhaps after many years, one "may" begin to be sensitive enough to receive information directly from the intelligence of Reiki. Then one can begin to call themselves a "Master". We meet, participate in energy exchanges, internet chat, and email with Masters that say that they have done Reiki long enough to earn the right not to have to do any more hands-on... What? "Hands-on" is the foundation of all Reiki techniques...whether it is an 'in-person' or absentee treatment, a personal or absentee initiatory attunement....all are based on using the hands to transmit energy into the auric fields of the person receiving the Reiki. While on the subject of attunements, we have found that there are as many variations of the initiatory attunements as there are "Masters" teaching. Even the students from one class will adopt their individual perceptions of the method for passing an attunement according to their understanding, beliefs, and filters. We often hear "Masters" saying that they have the correct method, judging others as doing the attunements wrong; such audacity and ego. We have come to know that it is not the "Master" that does the 'real attunement' but rather the previous lineage holders and the spiritual Masters on higher dimensional planes who are performing the ceremonial ritual. We "Masters" actually have no concept of what is happening during an initiatory attunement; so why do we think we know "how" to do one correctly? We have met few "Masters" who can adequately define "Reiki", let alone tell people how it works; so why do they bash others who don't use just the right words or who stumble in trying to pick words that describe esoteric terms/concepts. And we do see a lot of bashing... especially on chats, email lists, and newsgroups. Whenever one practitioner bashes another, it shows that one's belief system is limited, closed to expansion, and perhaps worse, fearful that someone else has the Truth. One's definition of Reiki may show that little is really understood about this spiritual growth technique.

Reiki is not (in our growing understanding) limited to being a 'healing technique', but more a path that opens one's perceptions to higher planes of consciousness and awareness. It is in that openness that we can truly begin to know what 'healing' is and how it works. There are many "Masters" that make the claim that they are healers; when actually few can truly heal. We can only heal ourselves. As Reiki practitioners, we can however assist an imbalanced person to store enough energy in their body to 'push' the imbalance into and through further stages of purification that will ultimately lead back to a healthy state. There are a lot of issues that have to be addressed before one will allow the innate "code of perfection" contained within the cellular makeup of a person's body before that person can again regain health and wholeness. And this is a process that may and usually does takes a considerable time. Healing does not happen with only one treatment, or even several treatments; healing is not about 5 minutes per position. It may actually take months or years of treatments to regain health. Other factors to consider are diet and environment, attitude and mindset, repressed memories and emotions, support of friends and family, and the help/direction from medical and complimentary health professionals. So how is it possible for Reiki practitioners and "Masters" to claim that they are healers? And then these 'Masters' teaching others how to heal using Reiki. No wonder there are so many "healers" out there competing for clients, unable to affect much more than a temporary relief of symptoms or at the very least, starting a purification cycle or healing crisis that only adds to one's discomfort. If you as a Reiki practitioner believe yourself to be a healer, then I challenge each of you to take on the really seriously ill/imbalanced in the world; heal them - those who have birth defects, muscular dystrophy, cancer, A.I.D.S., sexually-transmitted diseases, mental/emotional imbalances, those with physically disabling conditions. Do a treatment on these people and make the lame walk, the blind see, the deaf hear. Do it, or stop the egotistic claims of being a 'healer'. We see ourselves as practitioners of an energy system; ultimately we know that enlightenment (increased awareness) and wholeness ('illusion of separation' healed) is the ultimate goal of all 'healing modalities', but while here in physical bodies, we have come to honor the 'sick, infirmed, disabled' for allowing us the opportunity to share our love with them, to move beyond our mental projections of limitation, to lay down our swords of righteousness, and to become one within the community of mankind. We hope that if you haven't come to this understanding that you will at some point. And the way to do that is to give yourself daily treatments of Reiki..... for whatever time your inner guidance requires. When you have a true sense of the changes that you will have gone through and others begin to ask for similar help for themselves, and every aspect of your life begins to flow abundantly with ease, and when you begin to detach from the gross over-materialism so apparent today, then you can begin to call yourself "Masters". Until then, do all in your power to be an empty vessel, open to the gifts from the Universe. When you can demonstrate perfect abundance and flow in all areas of your life, please don't let your egos block the Spirit of the Creator from manifesting and directing each moment of your physical experience.

In India, there is a greeting that is used when meeting or departing another's company.... it is "Namaste'". This loosely, but eloquently translates as "I honor the place in you which the entire Universe dwells. I honor the place in you which is of love, of truth, of light, and of peace. When you are in that place in you, and I am in that place in me, We are One". Let us each strive to be in that consciousness each moment. Let us honor each other's lessons, learning, paths.... let us walk together on the Reiki path in re-discovering who we are in the mind of the All That Is. Namaste' and Blessings to each of you.

blue spiral The Power of Many

There are two differing maxims about the power of numbers... the first is "One person can make a difference" and the second is "The energy of intent is greatly multiplied in direct proportion to the number of minds that are added". It is this last statement that I will address in this article.

Jesus is given credit for stating that when two or more are gathered in the Father's name, then the common desire of those present is multiplied ten fold. Let us look at this in relation to 'healing'. As Reiki masters, we have often placed our hands on someone's body and given a full body treatment that lasted for an hour or more. And we did see some change in the condition that we treated. But when we call together other practitioners for a Reiki Circle, then it is our experience that a much greater flow of energy happens and of course more change is apparent. And if there is a complete letting go of any and all desire for a particular outcome as a result of the treatment, and it is given to Spirit as is deemed best and in the Highest good for the recipient, then the recipient often states the treatment was exactly what was needed. We have repeatedly seen greater benefits from treatments when there are several practitioners participating in one common purpose. This being the case, it stands to reason, that the more practitioners sending energy to a situation or condition, the faster the clearing and re-balancing that occurs. So let us look as some examples that we have personally observed. Not too long ago, we received a healing request from an internet friend, seeking added help from as many practitioners that would agree to assist. The work was desperately needed for his wife who was dying and not expected to live through the night. A general cry for help went out through the Distant Healing Network (DHN), the Reiki mailing lists, the Reiki newsgroups, and was submitted to other non-Reiki prayer and energy volunteer groups and of course, some of these group's members passed this request on to their personal Reiki friends listed in their chat programs and email lists. Within a few short hours, there were many practitioners from all around the world who began working the case. And not only did the woman/recipient of the work make it through the night, she lived for another four weeks, which was enough time for members of the family to come together at her bedside, to heal their relationships with this lovely being and to make stronger the relationships between the survivors. Such a wondrous process for all that participated and for the woman who had the extra time to set her house in order, before making her transition. We all should be so fortunate to have this kind of experience and unconditional love from so many people when we make our transition. Perhaps this experience could be the platform on which a group of volunteers could be structured to assist anyone in transition so they would not have to die alone.

Another example comes from earlier in our traveling days together. We have so many wonderful friends all over the United States that we visited in our travels. In one city, there were many Reiki practitioners and the teacher who attuned many of them, who used her files to send out a letter asking if they would like to be a part of a large 'on-call' volunteer group that could send 'absentee treatments' to serious/life-threatening situations that needed immediate attention. The answers were overwhelmingly positive. Within a week, everyone received a list of all the volunteers with the instruction that any practitioner knowing a person who had an emergency need for treatments/energy would call the first person on the list, who would be responsible for calling the person listed beneath their name, giving only the barest of information about the recipient in need. The information passed on was: first and last NAME, AGE (approximate if exact was unknown, LOCATION (city, state, country, name of hospital/nursing home, etc.) and CONDITION (name of condition or brief description of symptoms). Often this information would just be left on someone's answering machine and worked when they received their messages. I remember, we were traveling, and a very long-time friend's daughter was involved in a motorcycle accident. Being a Reiki practitioner himself, he rode in the ambulance with his daughter and told his girlfriend to call around looking for us, that we would know what to do to help. Well, the girlfriend made several phone calls and did track us down and told us of the accident. We had her look for the list of Reiki volunteers that he kept near the phone, and had her call the first name on the list and to keep calling until she found someone at home, who could then take over the calling. Within a few hours, there were probably 30 or more Reiki practitioners sending the injured girl absentee Reiki treatments. Within a week of a very serious operation to correct the damage, the healing was so speeded up that the doctor had to remove the stitches and pronounced the girl to be out of danger and today, this girl is in perfect health with no difficulties as a result of the accident or the surgery. And yet another case from the same volunteer group in the same city..... one of the volunteers was visiting out-of-state friends when he had a life-threatening motorcycle accident that drove the handlebar through his liver. He was in serious condition and not expected to pull through. His family was notified and his girlfriend immediately grabbed the list and began putting the information out to the list-members. Back at the hospital, doctors were checking the young man every few minutes, and kept feeling his skin for fever; and his body always felt like it was burning up, so the doctors would have the nurses take his temperature, and it was found to be normal at most times. The young man survived and is leading a normal life, albeit estranged from motorcycles. These few stories indeed help us to understand that there is power in numbers....mountains can be moved when many people put their minds and energy on the task of re-arranging the hilly landscape.

We are just beginning to research and are on the threshold of understanding the power of the mind.... and each of you reading this article have experienced success in situations when others of similar thought/desire have gathered to focus on a common goal.

We hope that our readers will want to start a Reiki volunteer group in your own community and perhaps in the greater 'world community' of Reiki practitioners. It is going to take a bit of logistics, time and energy to create a strong foundation of compassionate 'Reiki' volunteers, but we are willing to help out if the call is felt in your heart. Please contact us via email and place your name into the hat.... let us show the world that Reiki can and is making a difference. We need a letter composed that easily explains this concept and asks for participation from all second degree and above Reiki practitioners in all countries, and in all languages. When we have a workable letter, we need to send it throughout the world via the internet; through newsgroups, mailing lists, chat rooms, bulletin boards, and email. The more ways we have of contacting practitioners in fast manner, the stronger, more effective the efforts. This is just designed for "life-threatening" cases, and is not expected to initially have a constant in-flow of requests. If this later turns out to be the case, then perhaps groups can be formed from the general membership that would specifically work with 'natural disasters', 'weather-related situations', 'burdens on world eco-systems','culture-related stresses' (i.e., crime, riots, racial tensions, slavery, human suffering, war, etc.). I believe that there is a 'crucial mass number' of participants that need to work on each situation/case most effectively and to add more than that number would not add greater benefit, and it is through feedback from the media as well as participating members that this number will be determinable. With good record/file keeping, this information coupled with other research projects and individual journal entries from practitioner's personal Reiki work will help the governmental agencies look more seriously at Reiki; as a complementary adjunct to standard medical therapies/modalities and as coverage under insurance plans. We are on the brink of a new consciousness in human lifestyles..... will you be a fore-runner and help to birth the dream....or wait on the side-lines to see if it happens?

blue spiral Do Reiki, Live Reiki, Be Reiki

Published in the April 1998 issue of "The Messenger"

We have been Reiki Masters just under four years, and received our First Degree attunement in '92..... but we have pushed the envelope with our practice; so to speak. We are not 'all-knowing' but any readers having questions about procedures, techniques, branches of Reiki, or practices, we probably have done it and will share our understandings to those that ask. Our first master (we are attuned to multiple branches) was a task-master, pushing us to do as much Reiki as she did...... and that was a lot. She often worked 8 hours per day on one person to get an idea what Reiki was capable of doing. And we adapted similar inquisitiveness. We have done as much as 11 hours of hands-on self-treatments in a day...... and let me say, that if you think that one hour feels good, imagine what the body might feel after that many hours of energy....... you have to experience it to fully know. So, we chose to travel the country, seeking out masters/teachers that have been in Reiki for a while, especially those who appeared to be the founders (or placed high in the lineage) of the various Reiki branches. Back then (92-96), there were only a few...... today there are over 30 and growing. We were determined (at one time) to take it all, to read all the books on Reiki, to be extremely knowledgeable about this "healing method" that was growing in popularity. Well....... needless to say, it was growing faster than we could keep up with. After being attuned to 9 of the then 15 branches, we came to the understanding that there wasn't much new information coming from teachers......more a re-inventing and teaching the same information in new ways, putting a different emphasis on the techniques, attunements, and symbols. So, I will share some of our knowledge....... and please, take all information and channel it through your own "inner knowing"...... if it feels right for you, use it until you receive your own understanding.

Reiki is not...... I repeat for emphasis...... not a healing technique. It is a spiritual practice/discipline that helps us to connect more to Spirit/Source of life energy. Because of our lack of spiritual focus, we have little 'chi ' flowing through us (compared to what is available to us). Reiki is a vibratory energy that when we intend/desire to be connected and receive more through our reality, then we bring more Spirit into the physical plane and our body. Spirit is..... perfection, balance, life, oneness, wholeness, etc.; and that can only lead to more personal energy, and health is a by-product of being filled with Spirit/Creative Principle/God/Goddess. When we have more Spirit/Life-force within, we can share that with others..... and they will respond...... where Spirit dwells, the memory of perfection (original thought design for all life-forms) begins to bring all energy into balance. We are not attuning a person to anything....we are fulfilling their inner-urges to move toward their Spiritual Selves..... and that is what brings wholeness/health. There are a lot of 'half-truths' being embraced, and most of them are not supported by direct experience.... but rather, the words were taught, and repeated blindly. We "strongly suggest" that you practice, practice, practice on yourself...... keep journals expressing what you feel, what results you receive, what understandings come to you. Do this for all self-work and for treatments that you do on others. The more you truly understand from experience, the better will be your training. Share with others what you have come to know, teach others to do the same; and perhaps in time, Reiki will once again be recognized as the spiritual study that it is.

Hope this is inspiring to all readers. Be discerning about what you find on the internet, in books, or just floating around the Universe...... remember, few people are leaders; most are followers.....and there are enough of them. Determine to learn from the intelligence of Reiki and give little importance to what is said about it. Do Reiki, live Reiki, be Reiki.

blue spiral Are the Reiki Symbols Secret?

The symbols are not secret....they are, however, considered sacred. They were not given to the un-initiated, to people who were not working consciously on their spiritual growth. The system we know as Reiki today is so much more than a healing system; it is a spiritual path which if worked will re-connect one with Divine Source/God. The symbols accelerate this growth. The power symbol for example does not just increase the power of a treatment, it calls forth a greater volume of Divine Light/Christ/God energy (as would a thoughtful prayer) to fill up, balance and make one whole (re-connected to Creator/Source/God). This Divine Light fills the recipient's body balancing all levels of their being and raising their vibrational frequency; as a result the body finds balance and we see healing occur on the physical level (that which we think of as who we are). So the symbols are sacred tools which by their use allow us to remember our connection to God/Goddess/All That Is, is this not sacred?

The dictionary defines secret as: 1) kept or intended to be kept from the knowledge or view of others, to be known only by specified people, 2) a mystery or thing no one properly understands. The dictionary defines sacred as: 1) associated or dedicated to God, or regarded with reverence because of this.

So, the symbols are not secret, they are not kept only for special or specified people nor are they something which no one properly understands. They are available to anyone who wishes to study Reiki. And, if studied, utilized and practiced the symbols communicate with each Reiki practitioner and the fullness of their meaning is revealed, in time. They are held in reverence because they bring in volumes of that which is Divine. The more Reiki one does the stronger their connection to Divine Source/Creator becomes and the more they understand this principle.

These days anyone can find the symbols published in several Reiki books and even on the internet, we feel that those who have openly published the symbols do not respect or understand the Divine qualities the symbols impart. It is simply information and marks on paper to be disseminated freely. Another way of saying this is, that when the system and its tools are not taught so that the fullness of the system is understood, then practiced with discipline, and directly felt/experienced - then often the tools are laid aside, thought not to be of value, or published as information about yet another healing system. What some people do not understand from soul level, they often discard and demean.

So go forth and Reiki, Reiki, Reiki and bring Divine Reiki Love, Light, and Peace into our planet permanently and let the intelligence of Reiki guide you to new levels of understanding.
