Throughout my medical career, I have had a special interest in palliative medicine. This is that part of medicine that emphasizes comfort, especially when curative treatment is no longer feasible. In other words, when a disease process or condition is not curable, or if the person rationally decides that the burdens of going through treatment are not worth it, there are still medical treatments that can be done to ensure comfort. Hospice is a special part of palliative medicine, dealing with care during the very last months of life. However, the principles and practice of palliative medicine are not limited to just hospice patients. I have undertaken additional training in palliative medicine and am now board certified by the American Board of Hospice and Palliative Medicine. I am also active and one of the charter members of the Texas Academy of Palliative Medicine.
