JOHN THOMAS GOODWIN

born- Nov.13,1846 in Troy, Mississippi, Prontoc, County. Died-1921, in San Antonio, Texas. He married, FRANCIS LOUISE MASK. She was born, Aug. 18,1862. She died, May 3,1941, in Justin, Texas. She had one (known) brother, "Dub" mask, born in 1849; Her father and brother were cabinette-makers; John and Francis married in Mississippi, before moving to Justin Texas, as most of the children were born in Mississippi.

John Goodwin, suffered from severe Pellagra. A disease, the doctors told him was contacted, from a poor diet, and eating too much cornmeal products. My grandmother 'Josie', said that she can remember from as far back as a tiny tot, that her daddy was ill with it and had to walk with a cane way back then. He had sores on his legs that would not heal. Eventually gangrene set in, and the county doctor came to Johns house, and put him on the kitchen table, and using a regular saw, amputated John's leg. The surgery was botched, and left damage to the nerves in his leg, that was so painful, that he had a nervous breakdown, and was sent to a institution, where he eventually died.

My mother, Inez Chadwick, said she remembered them vividly from when she was a child, as they lived right behind John and Francis in Justin, Texas. She told me that her Grandmother, Francis had to take in laundry, to support the family as her grampa John was too ill to work.

Mama, diden't like her grandma Goodwin very much. She said that she was a good woman, but with an abrupt, and stern manner, and a sharp tongue.(Maybe that is where Grandma Chadwick, Francis' daughter got her personality-from her mother.*grin*). Francis must have been a strong and good person, to raise seven children, a grandson, and care for a son after he was grown , who had T.B, along with a sick husband and doing laundry for others, seven days a week.

The family suffered many difficulties, and illnesses. Mainly Tuberculosis, and crippling artheritis. Mama said that her Grandma Goodwin, loved to tease and pester the kids, and she played favorites amongst the grand children. She told me many stories about the family, that I will try to insert here and there for your pleasure. John and Francis had seven children, and raise a grandson as their own.

ZOLA GOODWIN

(Charlie/John Thomas);.b-1910,in Texas. Reports say that Zola was spoiled rotten by her mother, and she doted on buying Zola beautiful clothes, and things. She was also Grandma Goodwins favorite, and she made no bones about it. She was five years younger than my Mom , Inez.

Mama remembers her as a some-what 'primadonna'. Always wearing fancy clothes. Another cousin of theirs was a couple years younger than Zola, her name was Jewel, and Mama said she took no gaff off of anyone. One day they were all over at Grandma Goodwins, about ten assorted cousins, of assorted ages. Grandma Goodwin had enough of them running in and out of the house. Since it was very hot that day, she took blankets and put them over several clothes lines in the yard, for shade and put all the kids in the yard. All except Zola, who was primping upstairs. Grandma Goodwin took three watermelons, and divided two and three forths up amongst the children, giving them a large slice each. The remaining large forth of a melon , she set on a plate on the steps of the front porch and called Zola down to eat it. All the kids resented Zola getting such a large slice. Zola came waltzing out and sat down on the front step to eat her melon, but just as she reached for it cousin Jewel came running up the steps, and 'accidently' put her big, dirty barefoot right in the middle of the melon. Mama said Jewel was punished, but she diden't care, at least Zola diden't get the 'lions share' this time. Later on Mama, said she felt bad when Zola contacted tuberculosis, and was very sick. She was cured from this disease, but died young from Kidney disease. She was only nineteen when she died, around 1930.

(John Thomas):. b-?. He married, BERTHA_________; They lived near Waco, Texas. Tom was a Penticostal Preacher. Mama tells the story, that one day after his sermon, Uncle Tom, went to the bathroom, actually a 'out-house', in back of the church. He was accosted by a man, who aimed a gun at Uncle Tom, and accused him of 'messing around' with his wife. He shot Tom three times. He must have been a bad shot for Tom, survived the shooting. 'TOOTIE' ________________?

All I know about 'Tootie", are two stories that Mom told about her..Story. #..1... Tootie was a tad older than Mom, and she adored Tootie and loved it when they got to be together. One Winter, just a couple of weeks before Christmas, Tootie and her parents came to visit a few days. When they left Tootie had talked them into letting her stay. Grampa Chadwick said he would get her home in time for Christmas. But it came a blizzard, and they were snowed in, and Tootie had to stay there for Christmas. Grandma and Grampa, could only afford one Christmas gift a piece for their own children, and diden't have anything extra to give to Tootie. So Grandma Chadwick took Mom side and explained that Tootie was going to be so dissapointed not to get a gift, and would Mama think about giving Tootie her gift.It was left up to Mama to decide, and she did so love Tootie, so she gave up her gift so Tootie could have one. When Tootie opened the gift, Mom almost died. She told me, that if dissapointment could kill you, she certainlly would have died that day, because in the box Tootie had opened was the most beautiful, porcelain lady doll that Mama had ever seen. She said she cried for a week after Tootie left. Story #2.. Tootie and Mama got married when they were sixteen. Tootie married a little before Mama, and she was near due to have her first baby, when Mom was just beginning her pregancy. One day Tootie was walking across her yard, and twisted her ankle from stepping in a hole in the ground. She fell hard. She lost the baby, and a few days later, she died. Mama said she thought she would never stop crying, and she said for the first time since Tootie had got her Christmas present, Mama was glad that she did.

Tince got pregnant when she was around sixteen or seventeen, and shortly after the baby was born she contacted Tuberculosis, and had to go to a sanitarium. Her mother and father (John and Francis Goodwin), took the child, a boy, and raised him as their own. He went by their name Goodwin. While Tince was in the sanitarium, she met a man, another patient there, by the name of Jay, and they fell in love. After she was cured, he was not, so she remained at the sanitarium, and worked there as a nurses aide. When he left the sanitarium, she went with him. They lived together eleven or twelve years. While they lived together they were close freinds with a man by the name of Herman Draper and his wife. Years later, after his wife died, Tince left Jay and married Herman Draper.
