Neuron - The Cell
The typical neuron, consists of a
- cell body with a large nucleus,
- a single axon, and
- dendrites.
When a nerve impulse is sent through a neuron, the impulse is received by the dendrites. The impulse is carried through the dendrites to the cell body, where it is sent through the axon. The nerve signal travels through the axon until it reaches the synapse. The impulse doesnŐt travel directly from axon to dendrite, but uses chemicals known as neurotransmitters. The neurotransmitters released by the axon into the gap between the axon and dendrite, which is called the synapse, carry the nerve impulse down the dendrite of the next neuron.
