Neuron
The basic building block of the central nervous system (CNS) is the neuron. There are several properties that separate the neuron from other cells within the body.
- First is the neuronŐs specialization. The neuron specifically exists to conduct nerve impulses to and from the brain. No other cells can do this work.
- Secondly, the neuron is incredibly sensitive to oxygen deprivation. If the supply of oxygen were cut off from the neuron, it would start to die.
- Thirdly, the neuron is crucially important in many vital functions of the body.
- And the last main difference between neurons and other cells in the body, neurons do not multiply
(Gertz).
