Neuron

The basic building block of the central nervous system (CNS) is the neuron. There are several properties that separate the neuron from other cells within the body.

  1. First is the neuronŐs specialization. The neuron specifically exists to conduct nerve impulses to and from the brain. No other cells can do this work.
  2. Secondly, the neuron is incredibly sensitive to oxygen deprivation. If the supply of oxygen were cut off from the neuron, it would start to die.
  3. Thirdly, the neuron is crucially important in many vital functions of the body.
  4. And the last main difference between neurons and other cells in the body, neurons do not multiply
(Gertz).
