which to meet the obligations and expenses of the Association. Some of the new efforts noted in previous messages that we will be inaugurating this calendar year are at least one and possibly two Civil War Battlefield lecture and tours by John Hennessy. As some of you may recall, Mr. Hennessy, a nationally known historian and expert on the Civil War, provided the Association with a lecture of Centreville in the Civil War and a battlefield tour of the Second Battle of Manassas. We have had a number of requests for additional lectures by Mr. Hennessy and are anticipating a lecture and tour on the First Battle of Manassas, as well as the Battle of Antietam. Antietam was where Robert E. Lee and the Army of Northern Virginia marched immediately following their victory at the Second Battle of Manassas. If You are interested in helping organize one or more of these lectures, please let me know. Also, if you have other suggestions regarding similar lectures and tours, please feel free to come forward with these ideas. Another activity that was suggested and has received favorable support for, was the idea of the establishment of the Gate Post Estates Adventure Group which would be involved in hikes and other related activities throughout the year. Of particular interest would be inviting speakers from the Appalachian Trail Association as well as others familiar with related hiking and walking tours to Speak to Association members and help us lay out a schedule of events for the Spring, Summer and Fall months. if anyone is interested, please feel free to contact me at 266-3942. I would be interested in having an organizational meeting during the month of February to do the initial planning and scheduling. Both Gourmet Groups and the Wine Tasting Group were active during the holiday season hosting a special Christmas and New Year's events as well as a Gourmet Super Bowl party. Articles regarding these activities are in this newsletter and will prove to be pleasing though not fattening. Anyone interested in participating in a gourmet or wine tasting group should contact Terry |

Izaak Walton Update Dear Gate Post Estates Residents: I promised you an update on the SE Application process the Izaak Walton League of America has filed with Fairfax County. The League had wanted to build an adjoining pistol range to its existing rifle range but was informed by the county attorney this would result in a loss of their grandfather status to be exempt from noise control standards. The League left intact their desire to add an addition onto the existing membership house, expand the parking lot and keep the indoor archery. structure which was built without county approval hence the need for this application. I organized a movement largely with the help of the Centre Ridge Community. to speak out at the recent WFCCA meeting, January 2Oth, on issues of operating hours and safety. We were successful in obtaining 4 recommendations from the WFCCA to condition their approval of the current application, two of which relate directly to our neighborhood. The first was to have the operating hours presented by Izaak Walton put in their application so these hours could be enforced by the zoning office. The range has agreed to close on Christmas Eve day at 12:00 noon, Christmas Day, and Easter Sunday. They are not willing to close on any other holiday or reduce hours on any other holiday. They agreed to quit by 5:00pm on Sundays and not shoot before noon on all Sundays except the third, for their Black Powder Shoot. They agreed to quit by 5:OOpm during the week, M-F, and at 6:OOpm on Saturday. However. the range is not willing to make these hours a part of their application therefore, they can be changed at any time. The second recommendation was to increase the size of their berm to include the North side which is the side which buffers our neighborhood. This was in direct response to the letter our Board presented from our community requesting some more buffering. We also requested some reduction for hours on holidays. At the Planning Commission meeting on January, 28, the Planning (continued on page 3) |
