Hello, friends, and welcome to the Land of Conan's music resource page!
The Internet is an amazing tool for spreading the word of the folk music community. Here you will find links to many, many music sites on the web that are dedicated to doing just that. You will also find links to music-related sites that may not have such a noble mission, but that are nonetheless extremely useful resources. And you will find links to music sites (such as, oh, say, CDNow) that are more or less just out to make money. Because, frankly, there is nothing wrong with making money.

Folk Resources On The Web

folkmusic dot org This is an excellent site. One of the best things they have is a comprehensive list of folk musicians with sites on the Internet.

FolkWeb This is an online music store for people on independent labels. Lots of excellent musicians on here!

FolkZone Now my regional bias shows through... this is a site for Boston area musicians. They're not wonderful about updating their pages, often not mentioning when musicians put out new albums, but nevertheless deserve a mention.

Musi-Cal An indispensable resource for tour dates. Accept no substitutes.

Record Labels

Signature Sounds A Western Mass.-based independent label (run by Jimmy Olsen, for those of you familiar with Dar Williams' song Are You Out There) with an extremely high-quality list of artists, including Erica Wheeler, Brooks Williams, and Salamander Crossing.

Eastern Front Another Massachusetts-based label with an excellent lineup, including Jim Infantino, Peter Mulvey, and Laurie Geltman.

Tangible Music One of the more eclectic labels out there, Tangible's artists include Monk Wilson, Liz Graham, and Sara Lovell.

1-800-PRIME-CD "Our name is our number" is the slogan of this independent label, who not only have one impressive list of artists (including Jack Hardy, Susan McKeown, and 5 Chinese Brothers), but who also put out what is perhaps my favorite contemporary folk collection ever, Live At The Postcrypt.

Independent Songwriters Group ISG is a small label based in North Carolina, featuring musicians such as Tom Prasadao-Rao, Anke Summerhill, and its founder, Jimmy Landry.

Waterbug Waterbug is, of course, the label that Dar Williams started out on. She quickly migrated to Razor & Tie, but don't let that discourage you from checking out the many other incredible musicians on this label. Some of my favorites include Cosy Sheridan, Andrew Calhoun (also the label's founder), and the incomparable Rose Polenzani.
