Dance Types

Line Dancing is popular for those people who don't have partners and it allows a lot of people to join in instead of just one partner. Line dances are choreographed to either a particular song or a particular tempo/type of song. Each dance has it's own particular properties and conventions. You just need to follow the instruction sheets. The Line Dances page has choreographed dances you can learn.

Partner Dances are just like line dances except there are instructions for both the man and the woman. You need to have the 2 people to dance these dances. Partner dances are danced in a counter-clockwise direction in a circle around the dancefloor.

Two-step dancing is for 2 people around the dancefloor. This consists of one basic kind of step. This step is repeated over and over until the song is over. Once the basic steps are learned, "variations" can be used such as spins and fancy arm movements. The basics are explained here.

East-coast swing is a dance style for 2 people to any kind of swing music. Like the two-step, it has one basic kind of step that is repeated until the song ends. Variations can be added here once the basics are learned.
