East-Coast Swing

The East-coast swing is a stationary dance. This means that the dancers basically stay in the same spot the entire time. The dancers do not move around in a circle like two-step or partner dances.

The man faces the woman and his right hand goes around the lady's waist. Her left hand is on his right shoulder. The man's left hand is held out to the left with the palm up and the lady puts her right with the palm down on it. Don't grap each others hands but hold by the fingertips.

The dance pattern consists of 2 triple steps and a rock step. A triple step is 3 steps within 2 beats of music.

The man starts out with his left foot and the woman with her right. The basic step pattern is counted as follows:

Count Type Man's Steps Woman's Steps
1 & 2 Triple Step L, R, L R, L, R
3 & 4 Triple Step R, L, R L, R, L
5 Rock Back L R
6 Rock Forward R L
This pattern repeats. When you get good at the basics you can start doing turns and the really fun stuff! Watching someone (at a club or on TV) may help you to get the steps easier.
