DELPHI was the spiritual center of the ancient Greek world, radiating out to include the civilizations which had formed around the Mediterranean Sea and the mountainous territories to the north. The natural setting of the sanctuary was in itself sacred, carved out of the southern approaches to Mount Panassos by earthquake and rockfall and opening out onto the valley of the Pleistos River, which wound like a snake to the sea. As a cult center and sanctuary, Delphi was a place where spirit took form and was heard. In that sense Delphi is still a sacred place, revered by many Greeks and others in the world , although it is silent, no longer expressing the divine laws except as pilgrims are able to embody the sense of them in themselves from the power of the setting and the ruins so loving attended.
