Fake Delete R.J. Lindelof Fake Delete is a truly scary prank program. When executed, it displays a standard Windows 95 Confirm Folder Delete dialog box that says, "Are you sure you want to remove the folder 'Windows' and move all its contents to the Recycle Bin?" This dialog can't be closed, and whether the user clicks on "Yes" or "No," the prank will simulate deletion of all the files in the Windows directory. It's realistic, too, because it scans the user's hard drive and shows the names of all the actual files in the Windows folder being removed. Fake Delete is undetectable with the Start menu, nearly invisible to the Ctrl+Alt+Del Close Program window, and virtually unstoppable -- Alt+F4 and Ctrl+Break won't terminate it. All the poor victim can do is watch his or her files being moved to the Recycle Bin. Of course, it would even more scary if it looked as if the files were being deleted immediately with no chance of bringing them back, but you wouldn't want to be that cruel, would you?. Cute X Doll -- which, despite its name, can be played with by all ages -- is one of the better Tamagotchi-type programs we've seen. You'll not only take care of a cute, animated 3D-rendered cyberpet, but after it grows up, you can chat with it. It features an artificial intelligence "brain" that you can teach. Buttons give you quick access to food, teaching, shower, light, doctor, play, temperature, and info modules. Note: This is an alpha (pre-beta) version and could be buggy and/or unstable. Win-Error KitSOFT Win-Error is a gag program that gives you an opportunity to play practical jokes or get even with your friends, family, or coworkers. It simulates a variety of Win95 error messages that can strike terror into the unsuspecting, such as the infamous blue screen of death or the standard Registry or illegal operation errors. However, Win-Error goes even further: It lets you create your own error messages and choose from several custom icons to go along with your message. You'll even get a virus-detected message to totally freak out your victims. System Requirements Windows 95 Purchase Information Shareware: Free to try, $5 if you decide to keep it. from ZDNet. PC Whiskers Flying Frog Interactive Care for a virtual cat with PC Whiskers. Give your kitten a name, feed it, play with it, and put it to sleep. You'll have three environments to play in and explore: a bedroom, a front porch, and the backyard. Toys are scattered throughout the area -- your cat can hulahoop to Hawaiian music, put on some shades, chase a mouse, or play ball. The more you play with your cat, the smarter it becomes. You can monitor age, intelligence, mood, and health with a simple click of the mouse. Registration provides an additional 20 environments filled with more toys and sounds to explore. PC Whiskers doesn't do a lot, but it's amusing and of course follows in the wake of the incredibly popular virtual pets. EightBall 95 Paul Modzelewski EightBall 95 is a computerized version of the classic Magic Eightball. An EightBall icon is placed in your system tray when you start the program. All you need to do is ask a question, place the mouse cursor over the icon, and the program will respond with your fortune. EightBall uses all 20 of the original predictions. This program is fun to use and filled with nostalgia. System Requirements Windows 95 Purchase Information Freeware from ZDNet. Neko for Windows 95 David Harvey Neko for Windows 95 turns a cute little white animated cat loose on your desktop. Moving your mouse cursor causes the kitty to chase it. (Cat chasing mouse? Makes sense.) When the cursor is stationary, the cat goes to sleep -- until you move it again. Then the fun resumes. Neko (which is Japanese for 'cat') has been around the Windows scene for years, but this Win95 port adds goodies such as a system tray icon, support for external image libraries, and the ability to hook .wav files to the feline's actions (or lack thereof). Other options let you adjust speed, sensitivity, and image size, plus make the freeware program MS Internet Explorer-aware. Neko is not especially useful, but it's a lot of fun when you need a desktop diversion. System Requirements Windows 95 Purchase Information Free. from ZDNet. AlienDetector Keith Bingham AlienDetector is a fun freeware Windows program will 'scan' the immediate surroundings for life from another planet using, according to the author, the most sophisticated techniques available. Press a button and a female computer voice reports on the status of the alien scan (a la Star Trek) and reports back with the results. The author also claims the program is 99.9% accurate with a 100% margin for error. Help keep those pesky Alpha Centaurians away with AlienDetector.
