The Battle of Kanesetake In 1990, the Mohawk Nation at Kanesetake rose in arms, with the support of their brothers at Kahnewake, to protect their ancestral lands from the forces of the Canadian State. Over the course of a long siege, it was clear they would not surrender, and the government was forced to settle with the Warriors of Kanesetake. In this song, parallels are drawn between the situation of the First Nations in Canada and that of the Irish at the beginning of the Reawakening. It urges Irish Canadians, by dint of their own history, to respect the aboriginal peoples and calls upon them to support natives n their struggle for self-government. |
