The officers assigned to road patrol have one of the hardest job on the department. There is
three shifts of officers and they work alone in their vehicles. Since we are small in numbers, the officers
find theirselves working alone a lot of the time. Sheriff Roberts tries his best to have two officers on duty,
but with vacations, days off, schools and sick time, it is sometimes impossable. The officers have a LARGE patrol
area, to see click HERE. Of course we are kidding with this, but sometimes that is how it
feels. Wabash County is 16 miles wide by 27 miles long, 432 square miles! The county has a population of some 36,000.
We have four state highways and sveral small towns, Liberty Mills, Laketon, Sandy Beach, Disko, Roann, Urbana, Richvalley,
Lagro, Lincolnville, Treaty and Somerset. We have three more towns and cities, Wabash, North Manchester and LaFontaine, that
has their own police departments that we work closely with. Wabash County also has two large State Reservoirs with fishing,
hunting, camping and boating areas. During the summer the population increases greatly in these two areas, so much we kiddly
called them our other cities. Wabash County is blessed with these reservoirs, several rivers, creeks and lakes.

The officers also must and be a night watchman. While you are sleeping, or out of town, they check the small towns
and businesses. They search buildings they find open, they stop and questions people in vehicle found in out
of the way areas, they stop and interview people they find "hanging around" areas we have had reports of
criminal activity. They respond to check on things that we normally shy away from. They meet people in their
greatest times of need, or when they acted "he doesn't normally act like that" different. As the late
Captain Gerald Heordt of the North Manchester Police Department used to say "We must make a split second decision that will be studied, discuss and agrued
about by teams of lawyers and judges for years before a decision is made whether we were right or not."
Officers must wear several "hats". They must be marriage counslers, social workers, docters, lawyers, writers,
meditators and others.
Our officers are well trained and have been allowed to find their own "nitch" on the department. We have officers who are
K-9 officers, accident reconstructions, drug enforcement, OWI enforcement, investigations, and others, some officers are
"into" more then one field, but all the officers are responable for all areas of patrol duties.
OFFICERS ASSIGNED TO PATROL
These "pages" are to allow you to meet the officers and get to know something about them. You may Email each of them, but please
mark the message to the officer you wish to ask something of and we will see that they get it.
For information on our K9 unit, see Sergeant Miller's page.
