History:
Lucky was a case of either abandonment or
irresponsibility. He was found by one of my
nieces, running around alone and loaded with fleas. They tried to find
his owner but no
one claimed him or wanted him, either. They kept him for awhile
but were unable to make
him a permanent resident. They gave him to a friend, who in turn, gave
him to me.
If the truth be known, I hated his name at first and was going
to change it. Lucky earned it
by taking a trip to Indianapolis on top of a van in a set of box
springs. I know what you're
thinking...WHHHAAAAAATTTTTT?????
I'd recently moved into my house when my sister
was preparing to relocate to Indy. She wanted
to borrow my Jenny Lind bed and came over to pick it up. The material
on the bottom of the
box springs was torn and we knew that the cats liked to hide in there.
Both of us searched the
box springs before we loaded them but I had neither a flashlight nor
an overhead in the living
room at the time. To make matters worse, it was growing dark outside.
We honestly thought that
the bedding was cat-free so we loaded it on top of the van.
Any time things were moved in or out of the house, most
of the cats would hide and stay
hidden for hours. It never occurred to me that I might be missing one
until Tammy called
from Indy to tell me that Lucky had made the trip! Boy, was I
shocked!
Unfortunately, so was poor Lucky! I'm told that he poked
his head out of the box springs
when they were unloaded and that his eyes took up half of his face!
Poor baby! He was fine
otherwise, though and he got a big, rousing greeting from me when he
was brought home! I
didn't have the heart to be mad at him! He hasn't pulled anything like
that since then!
Lucky is a very active boy. Unless he's asleep,
he's always on the move and getting into
everything! When I lived at Mark's house before the
fire, Lucky was the first to start
exploring. We had to tear out the kitchen ceiling to do some plumbing.
This was irresistible
to Lucky! The bathroom in the upstairs apartment was right above the
kitchen and there was
a hole for him to go through. I can't count the times the upstairs
neighbors had to bring him
back down! We were always catching him upon the kitchen cabinets, getting
ready to launch
himself upstairs! Needless to say, we fixed that problem in a
hurry!
Any type of work done in the house is reason enough for
Mr. Stripes to help! I was laying
linoleum in the bathroom one day. If Lucky wasn't on the commode watching
my every move, he
was on my shoulders, peeking over them!
He has a very sweet nature that enables him to get along
with nearly everyone. He's adaptable,
too. He's rowdy enough to play with Bruno (See:
The 'Bru' Clan) and gentle enough to
cuddle
with Whiskers (See: The Older Generation)
without repercussions. He's one of the first to cuddle
up to one of the other cats. He walks up to them and immediately dips
his head down in a bow
before rubbing on them. When he's "on one" (See:
Dif-"fur"-nitions), it's a whole other story!
He'll slap at anyone in range with a disgusted look on his face!
Fortunately, this doesn't happen
very often.
With people, Lucky is very friendly. He's usually not
far behind Shades (See: The 'Bru' Clan) in
being one of the first to greet a visitor. His greetings are usually
to prop on a visitor's leg if they're
sitting and pat an arm. If they're standing at the time, he might stretch
up and surprise them with
a pat on the buns! He's scared company more than once when, in an
exceptional mood, he's jump-
ed on their shoulders to greet them more personally! I'm used
to it but most people are caught
unaware.
Lucky isn't a lap kitty, though, so when he does choose to settle
on my lap, I'm not mov-
ing until I must! Usually, he likes to literally bury himself in my
hair from behind. I have a lot of
long hair, so he just gets on the back of the chair and burrows in,
kneading his paws, purring
hard! He visits me at night, too. Since it's not quite as easy to burrow
in my hair, he steps all over
it while kneading his paws.
He's so sweet, it's hard to get mad when his orneriness
takes over! While you're here, if you feel
someone patting your buns, it's probably Lucky, wanting a pat in
return!
Play? You wanna play???
How dare you
call me "just a cat!!"
The love of pets can raise the spirits and lower blood
pressure!
