Canine Intelligence

intelligence is a term difficult to define, although very instinctively we can to distinguish if an animal shows " intelligent " attitudes. in the case of the dogs, he is doubtless that we required of them a great number of qualities, many of which they are not possible to be explained resorting to its instinct, but which they must be educated. and certain learning are so complex that they are not possible to be obtained like a simple auto answer to an order, but that demand a certain mental capacity on the part of the dog.

according to Stanley Coren (professor of psychology and trainer of dogs) we can distinguish three types of intelligence in the dogs:

instinctive intelligence
adaptive intelligence
functional intelligence or of obedience.

instinctive intelligence is the qualities fruit of the genetic inheritance. through the selection of the diverse qualities, fomenting by means of the raising those that interest, have the diverse races of dogs as the dogs develop to do something, is preferable to raise those that already make by instinct the wished work, instead of having the one that to teach to it therefore they are obtained, for example, tracking dogs that do not bark: instead of teaching to them not to bark, not to frighten to the hunting, those that do not bark on the other hand are races of extremely clumsy dogs, to that are develop as soon as nothing can be taught to them, nor have instinctive intelligence the dogs of Chinese origin (chow-chow) or Polynesian, as soon as they are the more ready that a ewe. one grew up them as eaten (still it is made), and to whom it interests an intelligent food.

since instinctive intelligence is enrolled in the genes, little it is possible to be made to change it. For example, he is inutile to teach to hunt rabbits to a Scottish shepherd (those of the type " Lassie "); these dogs tend by instinct to group a flock, so it is more possible that it tries to do that a group of rabbits keep it together in I circulate, instead of catching one.

adaptive intelligence is the capacity to remove relations from cause-effect, and to build in said consequence of another form implies the capacity to learn of the situations and to solve problems clarifying it with some simple examples:

a dog shows learning capacity if, for example he is able to deduce that when its master: 1) rises of the seat, 2) puts shoes, 3) opens the closet where it keeps the strap from the dog, 4) took the strap, and 5) finally, calls to him, is that they are going to leave stroll with time, a little intelligent dog will follow without moving until it calls to him, by often which the situation is repeated. A dog with a medium capacity, will begin to move the tail and to pay all its attention to the master in point 3). If in point 2) already it is upon you, perhaps he is " too " intelligent (it can which you are going to leave with him, can that no, but, to prove...)
the resolution of problems is another aspect of adaptive intelligence. a dog that to see you by a window, single is able to stick the snout to the same one trying to call your attention, is giving many samples of capacity to solve a problem but if after awhile, it leaves the window to look for a way to arrive to you, and it finds a door in another side of the house, has been able to solve the problem " how to go of " a " to " b " if the direct way is not practicable ".

the functional intelligence or of obedience is the quality that allows that the dogs are to us useful has a component of learning capacity, in which influences int. adaptive, but in addition, is its disposition to collaborate, that is to say, to follow those orders that have learned to obey this factor it has more influence of the personality of the dog, that of its intelligence to per a dog with adaptive intelligence high, but incapable to obey orders, is so little useful as a clumsy and obtuse dog.

the obedience intelligence is something that goes by races, since it stops according to what tasks it is more or less necessary that the dog is obedient.

the different races from dogs have a level different from the 3 types of intelligence, that cannot exceed once arrived at certain point, but it is possible to be worked with the dog so that it reaches his maximum. An education adapted from puppy, will allow to improve its personality and to increase its functional intelligence and of obedience.
