Going the Distance, Going for Speed

December 1998

-Don't be a sissy! Race cyclocross!

Life is settling down now. IMBA has finally gotten through to me, and I actually started doing trail maintenance. I'm doing it without permission on someone else's property, and I won't tell any of you where my secret bootleg trails are, but it's a start.

I was jonesing for some of those high speed Geax cross tires after George Hope stomped me into the ground with them (it mighta been more than just the tires), so I swang by the official Ibis moving sale to get some at fabulously discounted prices. Unfortunately, the discount price is still way outta line. $25 each!! What, they think crossers are made of money? That's pretty close to retail for Ritchey or Michelin tires. It's not like they cost a lot to produce, they're made in Thailand for chrissake! For $25 I could rent a couple 13 year olds for month in Thailand.

In general I thought the Ibis sale was totally lame. I never really paid attention to how overpriced their stuff is. They advertised a special deal on their Alibi frames, only $530. Like big deal! Those frames aren't even made by Ibis. For the same price you could get plenty of other sweet US made frames. If you were smart enough to buy a Gary Fisher genesis frame, you'd even get the right length top tube.

So I stopped jonesing for Geax tires and ordered some michelins from my homeboys at Precision Bicycles in Carmichael. I'll tell you all about 'em next month, but Dave Carr uses em, and he's fast, so they must be good, eh?

Rants

Why people from seattle are stupid; the mtb/cross controversy. In the interest of fairness, I also have good things to say about Dan Norton, the spiritual leader of cyclocross luddite movement, and I reprint his reaction to my taunting

Race News

More cyclocross results. I finally won some races, tho I'm sure no one but my mom really cares. For the '98 cross sched check out the NCNCA Cross page.

Equipment Notes

Want to know what the best shoes are, especially for cross? I can't tell you that, but I'll tell you what works for me. Choose from Time, Sidi or Carnac. You can also check out the review archive for previous reviews about MTB equipment.

Archives Index (sort of)

It's hard to structure the old information in an easy to find format. This is the old, old homepage of this site, with links to the reviews, results, epic rides, etc..

Back Issues of VS

November 1998. Time pedal review.
October 1998 . Cross season begins.
September 1998 . Late season results, overview of various equipment I liked.
July 1998 9 speed sucks. Long-term SID review.
June 1998 Why Richard Cunningham is a dork. Why I love my Esp. An 8-hr epic ride in Nevada City

Links That Don't Suck

You thought I was an egotistical jerk. Wait 'til you check out crosser Adam Myerson. He still think skinheads are cool.
Bikesite/Mudsluts. This e-zine writes too many positive reviews, but other than that it's pretty cool. They have some incredibly talented, good-looking, athletic contributors.
Epic ride stories Some of these are insane, but all are worth reading.
Precision Bicycles, your source for Fisher
Dan Garcia's Webpage He rides fast, so you don't have to
Napa Valley Velo Cross Website Your source for good cyclocross information in a less inflammatory format. Provided by Dave Carr
Steve Apgar's Napa Valley MTB page has some good off-road riding info for the Napa Valley area.
Adventure Sports Online. Good info for all sorts of biking, rafting, hiking etc.. adventures. The new version of the page seems to be much less graphics and bandwidty intensive.
Team WrongWay. This is pretty fun reading. These guys are only semi-serious about racing, but they're all the way serious about having fun. Plus they make fun of Steve, always a bonus.
