***** News Update: Nov 1999 *****

There was a recent demo/bbq day at the Cleveland Skate Park (see details here) and I had a chance to talk to the local council man. News from that area is good, but the time frame is a little long - they are doing the best they can with all the funding they can aquire. With the existing parks, lights are being used for night skates, Capalaba til 11pm, Cleveland til 8-9pm (local residents consideration) and idiots smashed the Victoria Point lights so no one can do anything there at night now. Cleveland was also looked at for an extension, but funding is not currently available.

The Stradbroke Island skate park situation is getting better, with the Amity skate park going well, (I have not seen it, but others say it is good!) and at least one more planned for the island, at Point Lookout somewhere. Dunwich still has an old bowl, but that is just being left to sit and be forgotten. Mt Cotton is getting a new park soon too, but that is all I know.

Then: (1998) Since skateboarding has taken off again, the bayside area has been without any new skate facilities until now. It was agreed by the council there to put in three small parks instead of a single big one, making it hard for the builders to come up with anything substantial. From what little funds they were given for the three individual parks, I believe they have done quite a reasonable job. Each has different obstacles to skate on, giving them an individual feel but, being within 10 kms of each other, they are good for a "three skates in one day" if you are in that area.

Now: (Oct 1999) Capalaba is the main one that I see in my travels these days, and it is still fun for a little skate. There are lights on there at night sometimes (up to the council whether they are on or not I have been told) There is now a big block on top of the bank fun box in the middle, which can be a challenge or a disaster for some. It is quite tall, and worth a look at if you have not been there for a while. Old features: bowl quarter at each end, hip bank, double block. (see pics) Beware of the annoying bmx kids though.

Cleveland has had a spine like pyramid put in beside the roll over, giving the park a little more than before. Old features: main easy hip bank, steep bowl quarter in one corner, normal bank other corner, big long block with lower block in a rough half diamond shape cut off by big block. (see pics) It is still a place for a good session (the best of the three in my mind and many of the locals) and quite often there is a home made rail or jump ramp there to skate on as well. Thanks to all who make life good for others!

Victoria Point is a little further off the beaten track but fun all the same. There is a steepish bank, a banked box in the middle with two blocks running down one side, two very nice quarters and a rounded bumpish thing that kids just roll over and bmx do their little jumps over. The grind block has been extended on the left (backing on to the dirt) side of the fun box in the middle so grinds are a lot better on that now.
