Coorparoo Skate Park

East/Central Brisbane

Built: 1998

Address: Cambridge St, (Coorparoo Common)

Many if not all the skaters in Brisbane would know of the Coorparoo Common skate park, off Cambridge St. Being of a centralised location, close to bus, train and easily accessable by car, this place certainly had a fair share of skaters since it has been open, as well as a few comps and demos. It is just off the road, in a huge park that has a basketball court, a playground for the kids, many picnic shelters, toilets, drink fountain and the small industrial area is also good for a plain street skate when there are not people working there.

Not so long ago, there was a mini ramp in the Wynnum area that I used to skate at, with many of the locals including Dave Adir of Slam Magazine. For a while it seemed we were fighting a losing battle with local residents who just didn't want a ramp in their area, but when they decided to move it instead of just ripping it down (like the old Paddington half pipe) we were all happy that it went to join the Cooparoo skate park where no one would try to wreck it. Being of seemingly perfect metal surfaced transitions, width 20ft? and height 4ft with two opposing 5ft extensions, this was many people's ramp heaven. That ramp combined with the street course is what has made the Cooparoo park so popular. On the street course, the flat bitumen surface with all metal ramps, there is a "+" (cross) shaped setup of four quarters at the ends with coping 5ft high, 10ft wide with a smaller 3-4ft quarter box in the middle that is good for going from hip to hip or right over, the platform of which is about 3ft square and folded edges as in no coping to hang up on. Besides these is a spine ramp set off to the side, same height as the middle box, two big flat square grind block type things and a smaller double coping rail that slopes into the ground at each end and goes from high to low, as in not flat across.
