Local Competitions
and Results

When comps have been on, I usually try to get out and see them, skate in them or at least be a part of them. For many I have been the mic man, but I also have judged a fair bit when I was able to. Most of the comps I have been involved with have been through Watersports S.S.S. shop at Springwood, as they have put many of the Logan comps on in the last year or so.

Individual pages of competitions are listed here for you to see. These ones have too much info or a few pictures to look at, so they would not fit on this page.

** Kuraby Skate Park comp 13 Nov 1999 **
Hosted by S. T. Skate Shop.

This competition was always going to be huge, with a lot of publicity and skaters coming from everywhere to compete and watch. The day was hot and the sun burnt up everything it touched, many people finishing the day with a little more colour than they would have liked. There is no shade at this park at all, and quite a few skaters were almost passing out and throwing up from the heat exhaustion this place brings on.

Mick from the Paddo beer boys did the mic duty and seemed to keep the crowds under control for the most part. The comp itself went very smoothly, except when the generator used for power ran out of fuel... half an hour of chaos and everything was back to normal again, the comp restarted. There were over 30 skaters in the seniors, almost that many in the juniors, all having two runs of one minute each to show what they can do.

From this, they had a new style of finals - called a "Jam comp" where two (or more) skaters are on the park at once, in a one and a half minute run, both being judged and trying not to get in each others way at the same time. I had not seen this in Brisbane before, but it did work really well, getting through the finals in half the time and showing off a lot more of the skaters tricks. Everyone seemed to like it too, as the day was already almost over. They finished up with the prize distribution and a product toss before I left for a bit of peace and quiet in the shade of home.

Skaters to note on the day: Many skaters showed themselves worthy of medal contention during the day but failed to place in the finals. These include: Jason (now on SkateBiz?!) with lots of tech tricks and good grind variations, but not enough to make it
Gareth - strong tricks but injuries holding hhim back
Cain Stewart - all the flips, ollies, grinds and slides, but all not quite together in his run
Tim from the Gold Coast, this guy really can get some good air, lots of variations, pity the judges don't like this side of skating so much any more...
Noah - lots of tricks nobody else can do, bbut same story as Tim, judges don't like his tricks.
Tony (SkateBiz), biggest air and big tricks - 360 flip tail grab, chest high over the big quarter hip.
Many more, but I cannot think of any more names at the moment. Results as follows:

Juniors/Under 16

Seniors/Open pro

The opening and comp went very well, with fine weather, prizes from Watersports S.S.S. shop in Springwood and the council putting on free bbq and drinks. People from Sunkist (orange soft drink co) came and handed out cartons of drinks as well. Comp results went like this:

1. Paul Kenyon
2. Ben O'Neil
3. Chris Wood

Seniors

1. James Wheeler
2. Steven Mortin
3. John Sloan

** Woodridge comp Early 1999 **
Hosted by Watersports Skate Shop, Hardcore Dist.

Everyone knew this was going to be a huge day, regardless of who turned up or what happened. The Logan council had arranged a big opening with bands and three comps - Skateboard, Inline and BMX. Watersports was running the show, with minor support from a few other shops (to give prizes to BMX and Inline) but the main one was Hardcore Dist, who put up more than the usual prize pool for the average local comp. I got my usual position nowdays on the mic and a few guys from around the place judged fairly.

As it was completely open, anyone could enter, so as expected, most of the field was left behind when the Kwala team skaters turned up the heat and got on with the show, blasting out with huge airs, big flips and a lot of smooth lines. The results were lost in the mess and the big clean up afterwards, but from what I can recall, this is how it went in the seniors:

1. Ben Ventress
2. Scott Shearer
3. Colin Kaye

** Acacia Ridge comp Aug 8th 1998 **
Hosted by C.O.C. and Goodtime Skate Shop

For a comp day, it was incredibly windy and cold and made things a little hard for many people there. The organisers had everything set up fairly early so if nothing else, the day was going to run smoothly from thier point of view. The sponsors were many, but the prizes were put up mainly by Goodtime Skate Shop. The Christian Outreach Centre ran the event and had bands playing afterwards, as well as many things during the day. Woolworths were very kind in putting up a huge amount of food for a sausage sizzle at lunch time. I cannot remember any of the other sponsors, so I'm sorry for not mentioning them.

Once again, I couldn't get my hands on the results for the juniors, but some of them could have placed higher than a few of the seniors!! Any sponsored skaters were not allowed to enter, making things a little nicer for the rest of us again, and the placings and prizes for the seniors were as follows:

1st: JAY MUSK

($412 worth of goodies, including deck, shoes, wheels, t shirt, video, cd,  assorted magazines and stickers)

2nd: Steven Pearce

($282 worth of product, including deck, wheels, t shirt, cd, assorted magazines and stickers)

3rd: Mark Brimson (me!!!)

($123 worth of stuff, with a t shirt, video, assorted magazines and stickers)

4th: Danny Nichols
5th: Max O
6th: Brendon Scott
7th: Pat Mooney
8th: Cameron Whitaker
9th: Jesse O'Brien
10th: Nigel Maunder
11th: Aron Austin
12th: Scott Wilson

** Cooparoo Comp May - 1998 **
Hosted by The Good Bookshop (C.O.C.)

It is always good to see organizations that really have nothing to do with skateboarding getting their gear together and putting on comps under the "Youth Culture" banner. In a series of comps around the immediate Brisbane area, the one at Coops was quite well organized and greatly anticipated. There were more kids there than I had ever seen in one day, and the comp was going to be intense, with the names there.

Unfortunately for some of them, the judges decided it was a truly "am only" comp so Ben Ventress, Shane Wallace and others were not permitted to compete. That opened the field right up and a lot more people entered the comp, myself included. Quite a few people complained at the judging afterwards, but there was the E'S demo on at Paddington, so we didn't stick around.

1. Adam Rowe (deck, gear and cd)
2. Mark Brimson (me! back pack and cd)
3. ??? (sorry I missed it, too busy...)

** Acacia Ridge Comp Feb - 1998 **
Hosted by The Good Bookshop (C.O.C.)

I was working on the day of the comp and missed it, but from what I heard, it was like the one at Coops. Everything went down smoothly and most went home happy. Results were as follows:

1. Ben Ventress
2. Max O
3.  ? ? ? ?
