Underwood
Skate Bowl
Logan
Shire, 10 mins south of Brisbane
Built:
1983
Address:
Underwood
Rd (end with park and playing fields)
Underwood
Bowl to many has been probably the most famous
bowl in the Logan if not whole Brisbane area from the eighties up until
the present day. Situated at the end of Underwood
Road (with main park, bmx racing track and
playing fields). When it was first built, it was the best of its kind and
has lasted quite well, still seeing many locals and others skate its transitions
and grind down the concrete lips. The big parks that have been built in
the Logan area in the last year or so have drawn some attention away, but
it is still a good place to go for a quiet ramp skate when there are too
many people at the other places.
The
two different heights (big 6-7ft and small
4-5ft) and fairly smooth, gentle transitions worked really well to cater
for many good and not so good skaters, giving one and all the chance to
learn on small and take it to the big, where the older skaters used to
really put on a good show for the rest of the kids. The whole "U" shape
works well, being a half pipe or a bowl, or starting from the bottom end,
using it as a quarter/launch or whatever.
Quite
a few competitions have been held here over
the years, and even a few demos and quiet pro skate days, eg the Lake and
Walker team in the eighties did things on this place that no one had ever
though possible before, leaving all the kids with new lines and tricks
for many months afterwards. A review of the most recent comp can be seen
here.
This
was one of a few parks that was looked at
to have a bowl upgrade and street area put in (like the old Woodridge
bowl), but now the emphasis is on building where there has not been anything
before, or leaving the old bowls and concentrating on the street areas,
like Shailer Park and the soon to be completed
Browns Plains super skate park where the old
bowls are.
