Surfshops and other essentials
There are four surfshops in Trinidad - all in malls in Port of Spain - Long Circular Mall, Starlite Shopping Plaza (Diego Martin) and West Mall. Until recently, none have been well stocked. But now,as well as shorts, wax and leashes, you can buy boards from the islands' top shaper, Alan Davis, traction, board socks and bags, soft racks etc etc from Ogiste + Co, West Mall (tel: (868) 632 1649). You can also bring your board in for ding repairs by Dr Ding himself, Vishnu Lalla (tel: (868) 632 2781). Beach Break (tel: (868) 632 8045)in Starlite Shopping Plaza sell boards - new and secondhand and surfing accessories and also sponsor the national surfing championships.

You won't need to bring a wetsuit, but bring long sleeve rash vests and reef shoes if you don't like getting coral in your tootsies.

In terms of your quiver, a standard thruster is the tool of choice for most surfers here, with a few longboards and guns for the big days at  mysterioso big wave spots.

It is a bit difficult to reach any of the surfspots by public transport. Use hire car companies at the airports. One recommended company is Autocenter. Costs are about TT$250 per day. Fuel is about TT$2.90 per litre.
