The "Victory Gardens" are considered a part of the "Back Bay Fens", which in itself is a part of the "Emerald Necklace". The Emerald Necklace was designed by the famous landscape architect Frederick Law Olmsted, who also designed the "Boston Common" and "Central Park" in New York City.
The "Victory Gardens" are the oldest, and most well known community gardens in Boston.
photograph of Victory flower Garden The gardens are very well maintained; every Spring the "owners" of these gardens get together for a mayor clean up. At the end of the Summer the most beautiful garden (whether it is a vegetable garden or a flower garden) gets an award. Produce, garden-products and seeds are sold on this special occasion. Anybody who lives in Boston can sign up for a plot. At the entrance of the "Victory Gardens" is a sign telling you where and how you can sign up, but the waiting list is long...
