Alder Bay is at the Northern end of Vancouver Island, and Alert Bay is immediately across the bay on Cormorant Island.

The brickbuilding is the former residencial school, while the black and white building is the location of the masks which were used in the ceremonial potlatch dances.
Michel is looking across at the graveyard with genuine totem poles. Once erected, they were allowed to gradually age without repair.
The ecological reserve on the middle of Cormorant Island is a cold swamp on the top of a hill, and dark even on a sunny day. Michel and Christine demonstrate how individual planks were pealed from ceder trees which continued to live.
