INTRODUCTION

This is a book meant to spread awareness about a painful reality--the destruction of rainforests is wiping out plant and animal species at a rate unknown since the passing of the dinosaurs. When I first heard about this, I could not believe it. As a child, I had always assumed that somebody (possibly the president) was in charge of the world's environment. It never occurred to me that a mass extinction could happen again.
It is happening again. Our rainforests are shrinking, our climate is changing, and this year alone nearly 30,000 species will disappear forever.
The Truth About Rainforest Destruction is not about statistics, however. It is more the story of our culture's attempt to prosper at the expense of the natural world. As you read this story, you will discover why rainforests are so important, why they are being destroyed, and who is benefiting from this destruction. You also will learn how tropical deforestation is affecting several Indian tribes that live in the rainforest--tribes which are today fighting the last of the Indian wars.
Finally, you will read about solutions--real solutions. Conventional wisdom holds that if we recycle enough products or simply conserve and consume less, then our environmental problems will be solved. This is false. Never in history has mankind reduced its consumption of resources. It is doubtful we will start now.
To make real environmental progress, we must make changes in our economic system. These economic changes--a new environmentalism--I will explain at length while introducing you to the struggles of men and women determined to stop deforestation.
