Customizing Windows

There are thousands of programs available to improve on the Windows 3.1x user interface. When I was using this operating system, 2 of my favorite add-ins were:

  • Wayfarer - a Program Manager shell replacement, which is similar to Windows 95.
  • Plug-In - a fill-the-holes enhancement for Windows (v3.1 - v3.11). Again similar to features found in Windows 95.

Neither of these programs is going to make Windows 3.1x be as powerful as Windows 95, but they will enhance the ease of using this operating system.

Change the look of Windows 3.1x by changing the setting in the Control Panel icon, located in the Main folder in Program Manager. The most dramatic changes can be done with the Colors schemes and Desktop spacing options. Make some changes, then go back to your desktop and see if you like the new look.
