Why?

Having been to three solar eclipses in my life, one might be tempted to ask "why bother going to another one?" Seen one, seen 'em, all, after all? Right? Well, sure. Might ask the same question about sex, too. But we won't get into that here.

So, I saw an ad for an eclipse cruise in the caribbean sponsored by the National Space Society. It sounded like fun, but I wasn't totally committed to the idea until I read the fine print and discovered that Buzz Aldrin was scheduled to be on board. Buzz, as we all should know, was the second man on the moon. Additionally, his given name is really "Edwin" like mine (although he has since legally changed it to Buzz), so I decided I had to go on the tour, if only to meet him.

I called National Space Society for details, only to discover that the tour had been sold out months ago. Sigh. However, just as I was about to hang up, I heard "wait a minute -- how many of you are there?" One. "Oh -- well, we have a little situation. It seems that the former head of the N.S.S., a guy that's been involved in the space program since before there was a space program, has an extra bunk in his stateroom he's trying to fill. Interested?" Oh, ah, hmmm... Let me just go pack.
